Scripture reading for November 20th: Romans 6-8
“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” (Romans 8:22-25)
The great hope of those who trust in Jesus Christ is a redeemed and glorified body! I don’t know about you, but my body is not what it used to be! Age is taking a toll and time is moving on. This world itself is groaning under the bondage of decay because of the curse of sin brought on by Adam’s disobedience. Creation awaits the revelation of God’s adopted children in their glorified bodies. Paul states that creation will be liberated along with these children of God! (Romans 8:18-21)
We don’t yet see this liberation taking place. The kingdom of God has come among us by the Holy Spirit indwelling each believer. This indwelling is something invisible to this world, yet it is real and brings this hope and eager expectation. We must wait patiently for God’s time and power to bring about this promise. Faith works by love to keep us trusting as time rolls on.
We are not alone in this waiting process. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. He prays for us according to God’s will using our voice and tongue. (Romans 8:26-28) He causes everything in our lives to work out for good, by praying in agreement with God’s will. God the Father is also on our side and has demonstrated that by sending His own Son to reveal His love. And Jesus Christ is now risen from the dead and has ascended to God’s throne to intercede for us continually! (Romans 8:31-34) The Holy Trinity is actively helping to give us hope!
Finally, we are assured that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord! (Romans 8:35-39) There is nothing present here on earth or no evil residing in the spirit world strong enough to keep us from this hope! That’s hope that can save us!
