Scripture reading for July 17th: Proverbs 12-15
Key Scriptures: Proverbs 13:2-3 “From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the unfaithful have a craving for violence. He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.”
The wise man learns that life and death are in the power of the tongue. The tongue is guided by what is in the heart. An unfaithful man craves violence and speaks rashly, out of a wicked heart. This man will come to ruin! But the wise man will guard his heart and lips, preserving his life. Words produce fruit–good or evil!
Bless my tongue, Lord: “Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” (James 3:4-6)
