Portraits of Jesus from 700 years out!
Scripture reading for July 18th: Isaiah 9-12
Isaiah lived over 700 years before the coming of Jesus Christ. As he lived his life, God used him to write prophetically about the virgin birth of Christ from David’s line, His mission to the Gentiles, His unending kingdom, and the Spirit’s anointing. Isaiah’s own name meant, “salvation of God” and is from the same root as “Jesus”!
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with a child and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) In Matthew’s Gospel, he quotes this verse as fulfilled in the birth of Jesus Christ who was truly the “Immanuel”, “God with us”! (Matthew 1:22-23)
Isaiah himself had two sons who were given prophetic names concerning the future of the nation of Israel. Through their names, he told that the nation would go into captivity but that God would bring back a remnant. The people were caught up in conspiracy theories and were tormented by fears. Isaiah warned them that the Lord was the only one to fear! He would be their refuge and sanctuary! (Isaiah 8:12-14)
In the future God would honor Galilee of the Gentiles. God’s light would shine on those living in darkness there. (Isaiah 9:1-2) A child would be born and called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace! His government would be one of peace and from everlasting to everlasting. He would also reign on David’s throne, establishing it in justice and righteousness. (Isaiah 9:6-7) God’s own zeal would accomplish this! These scriptures all spoke of Jesus Christ who lived and ministered in Galilee. He did great miracles and mighty works there, bringing light to Jew and Gentile!
In chapter 11, Isaiah saw a shoot coming from the stump of Jesse (King David’s father) that would become a branch that would bear fruit. God would place His Spirit on this “Branch.” The Spirit was of wisdom and understanding, counsel and power, and knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:1-3) The “Branch” would delight in the fear of the Lord! Jesus Christ was the “Branch” who came from David’s offspring! He delighted in the fear of the Lord! At His baptism, the Spirit came down on Him and anointed Him to fulfill the Father’s mission of “salvation from God!” These prophetic words are signs pointing us to Christ, Son of God!
