Zeal for Father’s House
Scripture reading for October 25th: John 2
Key Scriptures: John 2:13-17 “The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple He found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And He poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And He told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make My Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.””
Jesus took His disciples to their first Passover together at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. As Jesus entered the temple, He found Jews there selling sheep and oxen and money-changers who would change the currency of those wanting to purchase sacrifices, all for a price. This angered Jesus, and he drove them all out with a whip fashioned from chords of rope. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and warned them not to make God’s house a house of trade. He was fulfilling what was written in the Old Testament Scriptures concerning the Messiah: “Zeal for Your House will consume Me.” (Psalm 69:9) He stated that the temple was “My Father’s House.” The Jewish temple leaders demanded a sign from Jesus of why He would do these things. Jesus prophesied to them about His death and resurrection.
John 2:18-21 “So the Jews said to Him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking about the temple of His body.”
Faith confession and prayer: Father, fill me with the same zeal as Your Son for Your house. I know that now I am Your house and my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and that Your people as they gather are Your temple. Let the message of Your life, death and resurrection bring resurrection life to those outside the family of God today.
John 2:22 “When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the Word that Jesus had spoken.”
