The sure Word of God!
Scripture reading for January 19th: Genesis 32-34; Psalm 145; Mark 13
Mark 13: 26-31 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And He will send His angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: as soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened; Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away.”
Jesus was answering the question of His disciples about when the temple would be destroyed and what would be the sign that these things would be fulfilled. Jesus warned the disciples about deception and betrayal and a time of great distress and tribulation. He told them of His return with the clouds of heaven in great power and glory. He told them of the angels gathering the elect from the earth and the heavens. He called them to learn the lesson from the fig tree, a symbol of national Israel. When Israel would again be revived and show signs of life and fruitfulness, the coming of Jesus was at hand. To emphasize how true this teaching was, Jesus told them that the heavens and earth might pass away, but that this Word and all Words of God would never pass away or change. Abundant faith comes from eternal truth!
Genesis 33:11 “Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all that I need.” And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.”
Prayer: Father God, Thank You for giving me the greatest gifts–the Word of God and Your Presence with me through the Holy Spirit! Heaven and earth may pass away, but Your eternal Word stands true and steadfast. You have been gracious to me and I have an abundance through Your unchanging promises!
Psalm 145:6-7 “They tell of the power of Your awesome works–and I will proclaim Your great deeds. They celebrate Your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of Your righteousness.”
Psalm 145:13 “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises and faithful in all He does.”
