Scripture reading for July 3rd: Luke 4, Psalm 131, Proverbs 7
Luke 4: 16-21 “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and He stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim Good News to the poor, He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And He rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.””
After forty days in the wilderness, enduring temptation from the devil, Jesus returned to begin His ministry in His home town of Nazareth. He went in the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit to the synagogue that He regularly attended each Sabbath in his early years. It was His custom to read Scripture, and those in charge granted Him that honor. Jesus quoted from the scroll of Isaiah a passage that would be spoken by Messiah alone. This brought all eyes on Him and Jesus then proclaimed that as He read the passage out loud, it had been fulfilled in their hearing. This caused quite a stir, first of wonder, and then anger that lead to a spirit of murder among some present. How do you hear Jesus’ words?
Psalm 131:2-3 “But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.”
Prayer: Father God, thank You for anointing Your Son with the Holy Spirit to bring forgiveness of sins, healing, and deliverance to Your people. Thank You that He fulfilled Your Word completely, bringing salvation to us. Help me to hear Your voice each day and walk in the guidance, wisdom and anointing of the Holy Spirit. May I announce Your Good News through my life, testimony and ministry to others.
Proverbs 7:24 “And now, O sons, listen to me, and be attentive to the words of my mouth.”
