Choosing a firm foundation!

Scripture reading for September 29th: 1st John 2, Psalm 45, Proverbs 9

1st John 2: 15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life–is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

There is a war going on for the affections of mankind. We are born centered on ourselves. We love ourselves and want anything that pleases us. The world appeals to the desires of our flesh and whatever pleases our eyes or body, just like a seductive woman appealing to a simple man. John, the Apostle of Jesus Christ, warned believers against loving the world. This world is temporary and passing away. We can’t love the world and love God our Father. There is no room for both. Wisely choose to love God, Whose throne is forever and ever! When we love God, we embrace righteousness and choose to love God and do His will! We depart from wickedness and that which is passing away to embrace the eternal!

Psalm 45:6-7 “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness beyond Your companions.”

Prayer: Father God, give me discernment today concerning the seductions of this world and its appeal for my affections. I choose to love God alone and be faithful to do His will and worship Him alone. Anoint me with the oil of gladness today that those in the world might be drawn to ask me the reason for my hope and joy. I will share with them the Good News of a Savior, Christ the Lord, Whose joy is mine!

Proverbs 9:13-118 “The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house; she takes a seat on the highest places of the town, calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” And to him who lacks sense she says, “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, and her guests are in the depths of Sheol.”

Abiding forever!

Scripture reading for November 23rd: Haggai; Zechariah 1; Psalm 138; 1 John 2

Key Scriptures: 1st John 2: 15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life–is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Affections help us to set priorities and guide us through life. The Apostle John warned the believers not to set their affection on this world. Love of this world, its desires and appetites and the things that worldly people hold in high esteem, will block out a person’s ability to love the Father. Besides, all these things and activities are temporal and passing away. If we love the Father and those created in His image, we will seek to share God’s love and plan of salvation. We will do the will of the Father and instead of having temporary pleasure but eternal loss. We will enjoy life eternally resting in God’s presence and peace.

Psalm 138:8 “The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of Your hands.”

Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, I love You and the Father and have set my heart to do Your will while on my temporary assignment in this world. Give me daily reminders of Your great love and faithfulness and my need to hold this world lightly with an open hand.

Haggai 2:9-10 “The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the Lord of Hosts. The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of Hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of Hosts.”

Having eternal impact!

Scripture reading for November 20th:  1st John 2, Psalm 91-92, Proverbs 16

Key Scriptures:  1st John 2:15-17  “Do not love the world or the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life–is not from the Father but is from the world.  And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

John cautioned followers of Christ to hold the things of this world with an open hand.  The human desires for power, material things, and status did not come from God the Father, but from our flesh and the world we live in.  This world and its desires are passing away.  It is very temporary.  As Christ’s disciples, we must seek and obey the will of God.  That is eternal and life indeed!

Faith Confession:  Lord, forgive me for holding on to the things of this world and often following its desires.  Help me today to embrace Your will and obey Your word with joy and eternal hope!  You promise the best is yet to come!  Amen!

Proverbs 16:20  “Whoever gives thought to the Word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.”
