God looks at the heart!

Scripture reading for March 21st: 1st Samuel 16-19

Our culture prizes youth, beauty, intelligence, power, and money!  We tend to judge people by what we see or know about their life.  Where do they live?  What kind of car do they drive?  Are they handsome or beautiful?  What position do they hold?  Not much has changed since the fall of man.  We are very driven by our senses and peer pressure, but God sees differently!

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance, or his height, for I have rejected him.  The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1st Samuel 16:7)

God is looking for a heart after God, a heart that will trust God and live by faith in His Word! (2nd Chronicles 16:9)  When we put God first, and not our “self”, He is pleased!   He is looking for a “humble and contrite” heart. (Isaiah 66:2)  He needs a heart that can be taught, corrected, and shaped for His habitation. God is looking for a pure heart too, for only those who are pure in heart can see God.  (Matthew 5:8)

God Himself provided the way through a descendant of David, the man after God’s heart!  Jesus Christ had the perfect heart!  He was fully sold out to God.  He did only what he saw His Father do and said only what He heard His father say! (John 5:19-20)  Jesus was humble of heart–and wants to teach us the same!  (Matthew 11:28-32)  Jesus was pure of heart–completely without sin!  Through Him, we can have a pure heart too! (1st John 1:9)

God still looks at the heart!  Does He see Jesus Christ as Lord in your heart today?  If He is not your King, why not humble yourself and invite Him to live in your heart today!  You will be eternally grateful!

“The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands.  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”  (John 3:35-36)

(Isaiah 66:2)  He needs a heart that can be taught, corrected, and shaped for His habitation.  If a man is going to walk with God, he must be humble and willing to learn.  Only those who are pure in heart can see God.  (Matthew 5:8)

How does an ordinary man measure up?  God Himself provided the way through a descendant of David, the man after God’s heart!  Jesus Christ had the perfect heart!  He was fully sold out to God.  He did only what he saw His Father do and said only what He heard His father say! (John 5:19-20)  Jesus was humble of heart–and wants to teach us the same!  (Matthew 11:28-32)  Jesus was pure of heart–completely without sin!  He offered His own life on our behalf!  We can have a pure heart too!  We can learn from Him by receiving the Holy Spirit of Truth.

Praise the Lord, God still looks at the heart!  Does He see the Lord Jesus Christ in your heart today?  If He is not your Lord, why not humble yourself and invite Him to live in your heart today!  You will be eternally grateful!

God Looks at the Heart

Scripture reading for March 22nd: 1st Samuel 16-19

How would you go about finding a king?  Would you look for the strongest person you could find?  Would your king have to be the perfect man in looks and ability?  Would you look for someone who was charismatic and a natural leader?  God knows how to choose people He wants to lead for each situation to accomplish His purposes, but His ways are different than ours!

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.  The Lord does not look at the things that man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” (1st Samuel 16:7)

Samuel was told to go to the house of Jesse of Bethlehem and anoint one of his eight sons as king.  Samuel obeyed the Lord, found Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.  (1st Samuel 16:5-6)  When Samuel saw Eliab, one of the sons, he felt that he must be the one God would choose.  This son was evidently tall and handsome and looked like a real leader.  God said “no”!  The rest of the sons also came before Samuel and God said no to each one.  There was one more young son who was tending sheep.  This son was sent for and when he arrived, God spoke plainly!  “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” (1st Samuel 16:12b)

God saw David’s character coming from a heart that was after His own.   David was known for his ability to sing and to play the harp skillfully.  (1st Samuel 16:18)  His ability to worship God was in his heart!  David was a brave and courageous warrior as well.  This courage was in his heart from a trust in the God he worshiped!   It was demonstrated as he cared for his sheep and protected them from the lion and bear.  (1st Samuel 17:34-35) God was also with David!  This made all the difference in the world!  Check your heart today!    Your character is more important than your looks or outward appearance!

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance, or his height, for I have rejected him.  The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1st Samuel 16:7)

What does God see in our heart?  What is he looking for?  He is looking at the things we truly value. He is looking for a heart after God, a heart that will trust God and live by faith in His Word! (2nd Chronicles 16:9)  When we put God first, and not our “self”, He is pleased!   He is looking for a “humble and contrite” heart. (Isaiah 66:2)  He needs a heart that can be taught, corrected, and shaped for His habitation.  If a mere man is going to walk with God, he certainly must be humble and willing to learn.  I believe God is looking for a pure heart too.  Only those who are pure in heart can see God.  (Matthew 5:8)

How does a mere man measure up?  God Himself provided the way through a descendant of David, the man after God’s heart!  Jesus Christ had the perfect heart!  He was fully sold out to God, his Father.  He did only what he saw His Father do and said only what He heard His father say!(John 5:19-20)  Jesus was humble of heart–and wants to teach us the same!  (Matthew 11:28-32)  Jesus was pure of heart–completely without sin!  He offered His own life on our behalf!  If we confess our sins to Him, He will cleanse us of our sins and all unrighteousness!  (1st John 1:9)  We can have a pure heart too!  We can learn from Him by receiving the Holy Spirit of Truth.  We can live by faith in His Word!  The just shall live by faith!

Praise the Lord, God still looks at the heart!  Does He see Jesus Christ as Lord in your heart today?  If He is not your King, why not humble yourself and invite Him to live in your heart today!  You will be eternally grateful!
