The great mystery of godliness!

Scripture reading for June 29th: 1st Kings 8, Psalm 30, 1st Timothy 3

1st Timothy 3:14-16 “I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the Truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.”

Paul had just laid out for Timothy the qualifications for those in leadership in the church where he was pastoring. Timothy was Paul’s ‘son in the faith’ and a close associate in some of Paul’s missionary journeys. Paul told Timothy that the church was the ‘household of God’ and a ‘pillar and buttress’ of the Truth. The new ‘building’ of God was the lives of believers both individually and corporately. God had given the Holy Spirit to indwell them and to form them into God’s image of righteousness and holiness through godliness. Godliness was not just keeping the rules of do’s and don’ts, but was a manifestation of the Son of God in human flesh, crucified, resurrected, and proclaimed and believed on among Jew and Gentile!

Psalm 30:11-12 “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, that my glory may sing Your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever!”

Prayer: Father God, as I came home to You as a prodigal, you turned my mourning into dancing and clothed me with gladness! As a member now of Your household, the Church, I will praise You and not be silent. I will proclaim among the nations the ‘mystery of godliness’, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, crucified, raised to glory and coming again for His Bride!

1st Kings 8:56 “Blessed be the Lord Who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all He has promised. Not one word has failed of all His good promise, which He spoke by Moses His servant. The Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers. May He not leave us or forsake us, . .”

The Great Mystery of Godliness!

Scripture reading for June 29th: 1st Kings 8, Psalm 30, 1st Timothy 3

Key Scriptures:  1st Timothy 3:14-16 “I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.  Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:  He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.”

Paul was writing to help Timothy understand how to behave in Christ’s “household”, the Church!  The Church of Jesus Christ is likened to a building held up by a single pillar–the Truth of God’s Word and Son, Jesus Christ.  God revealed the “mystery of godliness” by sending His own Son in human flesh.  He vindicated Him by resurrection through the power of the Holy Spirit and the witness of the Spirit on Christ Jesus without limit.  His Name is proclaimed among all nations and He is believed on in the world.

1st Kings 8:10 “And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.”

Faith confession and prayer:  Lord Jesus, You alone are the pillar and ground of Truth, the living Word of God.  Help me to hold this mystery with worship and awe of Your unsurpassing glory and godliness.

Psalm 30:4  “Sing praises to the Lord, O you His saints, and give thanks to His holy Name.”

The mystery of godliness!

Scripture reading for September 26th:  1 Timothy 3, Psalm 43, Proverbs 8

Key Scriptures:  1st Timothy 3:14-16 “I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.  Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:  He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.”

Paul hoped to see his son in the faith, Timothy, soon.  But in case that didn’t happen, he wrote down some instructions for his conduct and those of other elders in the church.  The church was God’s family (household), and a “pillar and buttress” of truth.  Jesus Christ is the “truth” and the ultimate revelation of the mystery of true godliness.  His birth, death and resurrection from the dead, appearance on earth and in heaven is proclaimed among the nations prompting faith and salvation.  He alone is worthy of worship and eternal praise!

Faith Confession:  I want to live a godly life.  The mystery of godliness is great and is found in the greatest Man, the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God.  Through faith in Him, God has granted me the desires of my heart.

Psalm 43:3-4 “Send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling!  Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise You with the lyre, O God, my God.”

The Mystery of Godliness!

Scripture reading for September 27th:  1st Timothy 3

Key Scriptures for over-comers:  1st Timothy 3:14-16  “Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.  Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great:  He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.”

Paul hoped to be able to join Timothy but knew he might be delayed so he gave instructions to Timothy to share with the church he was overseeing.  Paul saw the church of Jesus Christ as a “pillar and foundation of the truth.”   To Paul, all truth was found in Jesus Christ and godly living was found in living by and in Truth.  The secret mystery of true ‘godliness’ was found in the incarnation of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.  It is only through faith in His incarnation, life of godliness, death and resurrection that all sinners are made righteous.  This is the message entrusted to the church, the ‘pillar and foundation of the truth’.

Observations for over-comers:  We over-come the traps of pride, sin, the flesh and the devil by living by faith in Jesus Christ, God incarnated, crucified for our sins, and raised to life and eternal glory.  “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.  He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.  It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”  (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
