“Come!”
Scripture reading for August 4th: Amos 4-6, Psalm 55, Matthew 14
Key Scriptures: Matthew 14:28-33 “And Peter answered Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.””
Jesus had been alone praying while He had sent the disciples on ahead in a boat. A storm arose in the middle of the night and Jesus came to them, walking on the water. They were terrified, but Peter asked Jesus to have him come to Him on the water. Jesus issued the invitation and at His Word, Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water. The wind and waves then caught his attention and he began to sink. Crying out to Jesus, Jesus took his hand and rebuked him for his lack of faith.
Psalm 55:16 “I call to God, and the Lord will save me.”
Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, I know all things are possible at Your Word. Help me to overcome doubt and get out of my boat of self-sufficiency and walk with You. You are the Son of God!
Amos 5:14-15 “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of Hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; It may be that the Lord, the God of Hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”
God will Reign Forever!
Scripture reading for December 13th: Amos 4-6, Revelation 11
Key Scriptures: Revelation 11:15-18 “Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever.” And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, “We give thanks to You, Lord God Almighty, Who is and Who was, for You have taken Your great power and begun to reign.”
Trumpets were used in Israel to call people worship, to battle, or to announce God’s direction. Here, the seventh trumpet that John heard brought an angelic announcement. The kingdom of God and Christ had come in its fullness. The God Who was, Who is, and Who will be, is King forever! As the announcement was made, God’s heavenly temple was opened and the ark of His Covenant was seen! The prophets called the people to be ready!
Amos 5:14-15 “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”
Prayer: Lord, I await the fullness of Your eternal reign! Jesus is Lord of my life! Help me today to order my steps in your pathway, to hate evil and love good and stay in Your grace through Jesus Christ. Amen.
Thankful for a Good God!
Scripture reading for September 28th: Amos 3-7
Key Scriptures: Amos 5:14-15 “Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say He is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.”
As a good father warns his children, so God warned His people, Israel, of coming judgment as consequences for their sins and rebellion. He sent Amos with a call to repentance: “Seek Me and live.” (Amos 5:4) Real life was found in keeping God’s commandments and doing what He decreed was good. If they would repent, God would show mercy. But pride and arrogance and riches and complacency caused God’s people who heard Amos’ message to sent him away: “Get out, you seer! God back to the land of Judah!” (Amos 7:12) May we listen to our Good Father’s advice today!
Thankful for a Good Father’s instruction: “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” (Romans 12:8-11)
