The ‘Abiding’ anointing!

Scripture reading for November 23rd: Haggai, Zechariah 1, Psalm 138, 1st John 2

1st John 2: 26-29 “I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie–just as it has taught you, abide in Him. And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears we may have confidence and not shrink from Him in shame at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.”

To abide in something means to take up residence and remain. John was writing to the believers being attacked by false teachers and warned them to listen to the Holy Spirit, Who abided in them. The Holy Spirit’s anointing brings instruction to us concerning living and applying God’s Word and thereby ‘abiding’ in Jesus Christ. John wanted believers to have confidence in their relationship with God based on Truth, not on some false teaching or opinion of men. A mark of false teachers was that their life was a lie–they failed to practice the Truth and abide in Jesus Christ by faith and through grace. A mark of a true follower of Jesus was practice of right living because of new birth and the abiding Holy Spirit.

Haggai 2:4-6 “Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of Hosts, according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.”

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your Name and Your Word and the anointing of Your Holy Spirt to abide in me and help me to abide in Jesus Christ, my Lord. Thank You for being with me always and for empowering me through the Holy Spirit and grace to live in righteousness and have confidence in Your acceptance when You return again. Abide in me and give me opportunity to share Your Word and Name!

Psalm 138:2 “I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks to Your Name for Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness, for You have exalted above all things Your Name and Your Word.”

Anointed Leader!

Scripture reading for April 5th:  1st Samuel 6-9, John 1

Key Scriptures:  John 1:29-34 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!  This is He of Whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who ranks before me, because He was before me.’  I myself did not know Him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that He might be revealed to Israel.”  And John bore witness:  “I saw  the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him.”

John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin, proclaimed prophetically the Name and mission of Christ Jesus.  His job was to call all people to humility and cleansing through water baptism.  This would prepare the way for the One who would baptize His followers with the Holy Spirit and fire!

1st Samuel 9:15-16 “Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over My people Israel.  He shall save My people from the hand of the Philistines.”

Prayer:  Lord, thank You for anointing Jesus, Your Son, to lead Your people and save them from their enemies!  Amen!

An anointing from the Holy One!

Scripture reading for November 20th:  1st John 2

John identified the false teachers of his day as ‘antichrists’.   An ‘antichrist’ was one who set their own teaching over and against what Christ taught.  In other words, Jesus proclaimed that He was the “Son of God”.  The antichrists would deny the deity of Jesus, also denying God the Father or our adoption into the Father’s family.  They claimed to be Christ-followers but were counterfeits!

“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come.  This is how we know it is the last hour.  They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us.”  (1st John 2:18-19)  John taught the church that the appearance of these false teachers marked the time they were living in as the ‘last days’.  These teachers came from within the church but were not really part of the true church.  We must now be in the last minutes or seconds because these same types of teachers abound in our world today.

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.  . . I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.  As for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you.  But as His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit–just as it has taught you, remain in Him.”  (1st John 2:20, 26-27)  God our Father has equipped us with the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is a Spirit of Truth that lives in each believer to reveal truth and give discernment of false spirits.  We must remain in Jesus Christ and follow the Spirit and Word to avoid deception!

The anointing!

Scripture reading for October 2oth: Luke 3-6

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”  “Then He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.  The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on Him, and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:18-21

Not much  is recorded about the life of Jesus from the time He was twelve until He was baptized by John at the age of thirty.  We know that He worked with Joseph part of that time in their carpenter shop.  He took part in normal family life and community life in the town of Nazareth.  Can you imagine eating off of a table that Jesus had made?  Or using an ox yoke that He had crafted?

At the proper time, Jesus went down to the Jordan River to where John the Baptist was baptizing.  John had spoken of one who would come after him whose sandals he was not worthy to untie.  When John saw Jesus, he immediately knew that He was this One!  (John 1:29)  Jesus was baptized and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in the form of a dove.  A Voice from heaven declared: “You are My Son, whom I love; with You I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21-22)   How these words should speak to each of us who are adopted into God’s household!  Jesus was then led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil  for forty days.  Each time Satan tempted Him,  He  successfully resisted because of the Spirit and God’s Word.

When he arrived in Nazareth at His home synagogue, He was invited to read from the scroll of Isaiah. The Spirit had anointed Him to preach the Good News and proclaim freedom to all who would hear.  He was anointed to heal and deliver the blind and oppressed.  He was to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.  As they listened, Jesus was the fulfillment! (Luke 4:2)   Through faith in Jesus Christ, the anointing and infilling of the Holy Spirit is available to us today!
