Scripture reading for May 3rd: John 3:1-22
To a Pharisee named Nicodemus, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:3-8)
This famous passage in John’s Gospel has been helpful for many people in coming into the kingdom of God. Jesus had an exchange with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin. Nicodemus had heard Jesus speak and saw some of His miracles and knew that Jesus was a man who had God with Him. Jesus told Nicodemus that in order for anyone to see the kingdom of heaven, he must be born again.
Nicodemus tried to reason how he might be born again. It was absurd to think that a grown man could again enter his mother’s womb and go through the birth experience again. Jesus helped this man by telling him about being born of the Spirit as well as by water. Natural birth comes when the water breaks and the child comes forth. Natural birth brings out the flesh and a human being is born with a sin nature and are in rebellion against God. In Psalm 51: 5-6 , David states that he was sinful from conception and born with sin. Jesus was implying that Nicodemus should have known this from his study of the Scriptures!
The Spirit gives new life to a human being. When we repent and believe on Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit enters our inner man and dwells there, marking us as belonging to God. (Ephesians 1:13-14) The Holy Spirit brings the “God Nature” into our spirit. Jesus said we must be born again. It is not an option! Have you been born of the Spirit?
