Scripture reading for November 25th: 1st John 4
Key Scriptures: 1st John 4:13-17 “By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in Him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgement, because as He is so also are we in this world.”
Fear of judgment and punishment is found in every human being. This fear is there because of God placing eternity in our hearts and a basic knowledge of God’s law and conviction of sin through conscience. When we repent and humble ourselves before God, asking Him for mercy through His Son, Jesus Christ, God the Father gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit to live in us and abide with us. We can confess ‘Jesus is Lord’ because we have the Holy Spirit. We can love others because of the Spirit of God, who is Love, abiding in us. His love is perfected in us and casts out all fear of judgment and punishment, because we are now justified and made righteous. We have confidence on Judgment Day through the love of God in us by the Holy Spirit.
1st John 5:18-19 “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because He first loved us.”
Faith confession and prayer: Father God, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit and a river of Your perfect love that enables me to confess Jesus as Lord and to know and believe in Your Son. Thank You for confidence that comes from the Holy Spirit and the casting out of fear from my life. Open doors today to share this great and perfect love with those who are cowering in the fear of punishment on Judgment Day.
1st John 4:20-21 “If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar, for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from Him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
