Jesus does the “impossible”!

Scripture reading for January 13th:  Matthew 9

A miracle is something that happens that is beyond the ordinary.  Miracles have been one of the languages that God has used to cause men and women to marvel and open their heart to believe.  Jesus the Son of God was a miracle-worker who did extraordinary miracles that got the attention of lost and hurting people and brought relief to those suffering from the power of Satan.

“While He was saying this, a ruler came and knelt before Him and said, “My daughter has just died.  But come and put Your hand on her and she will live.”  Jesus got up and went with him, and so did His disciples.”  Matthew 9:18-19   A ruler of the Jews came to Jesus for help in an impossible situation.  His daughter was dead!  For some reason, Jesus had become known for the extraordinary miracles that He performed.  Word had reached this ruler and he was desperate for help.   Jesus responded to the man’s faith, taking along His disciples for a lesson in the miraculous!

“When Jesus entered the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, He said, “Go away.  The girl is not dead but asleep.”  But they laughed at Him.  After the crowd had been put outside, He went in and took the girl by the hand and she got up.  News of this spread through all that region.”   Matthew 9:23-26  Jesus was mocked when He told the mourners that the girl was not dead but asleep!  They were escorted out before Jesus could act to defeat death.   After a touch from Jesus, death left her body!   Jesus is still the Miracle Worker today!  His followers are now His hands and feet!

Victory over our last enemy!

Scripture reading for August 24th: 1st Corinthians 15:29-58

Some church members in Corinth were living as if there were no resurrection.  The popular philosophy of their culture was “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” (1st Corinthians 15:32-33)  Those who were ignorant of the truth concerning salvation were being influenced by those still in their culture.  Paul warned them that ‘Bad company corrupts good character.” This ignorance was leading to sin in the lives of those who had once professed Christ and required repentance and belief of the truth concerning resurrection of the body.

Paul explained to these Corinthians the basics of resurrection from death to dispel their ignorance.  He used the concept of planting a seed to help them understand.  When a seed is planted it goes into the ground and dies.  The life that comes from that seed doesn’t resemble what was sown, but is more glorious.  Each seed has a different kind of resurrection glory produced by the life in it.  So it is with the human body of a believer in Jesus Christ.  It is sown a decaying natural body, but raised a glorious spiritual body.

The resurrection body of a believer will be a spiritual body, not limited by the laws of earth.  It will be a powerful body that does not grow old again or wear out.   Our natural bodies come from Adam, and are of the earth.  Our spiritual bodies come from the second Adam, Jesus Christ.  “And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the Man from heaven.” (1st Corinthians 15:49)  This transformation will take place in an instant when the last trumpet sounds, calling the dead bodies of believers from the grave.  We will be clothed with our spiritual bodies and be raised in a glorious body that will live forever!

“Then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”  “Where, O death, is your victory?  Where, O death is your sting?”  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God!  He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1st Corinthians 15:54-57)  This truth requires faith and action.  We must stand firm and always give ourselves fully to God’s work!  He is coming and resurrection is ours!
