Thankful for powerful and effective prayer!
Scripture reading for December 19th: James 2-5
Key Scriptures: James 5:14-18 “Is any one of you sick? He should call for the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the Name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess you sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again He prayed, and the heavens gave rain and the earth produced its crops.
James encouraged the church to pray in each and every trouble and attack. With sickness, the elders were available as men and women of faith. They were told to anoint with oil and pray a prayer of faith and God would do the rest. If there was known sin, confession would also bring healing. Elijah was cited as an example of an elder with powerful prayers affecting nature and nations!
Thankful for powerful prayers: “Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” (1st Kings 17:1 “But Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.” “Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on. . .” (1st Kings 18:42, 45)
