Power to endure!

Scripture reading for August 18th: Micah 1-4, Psalm 10, Matthew 24

Key Scriptures: Matthew 24:9-14 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for My Name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this Gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”

Jesus was answering His disciples questions concerning His prophesy about the destruction of the temple. They asked ‘when’ that would happen and ‘what’ would be the sign of His return at the end of the age. As to ‘when’, Jesus stated that no one but His Father knew the exact date or time. But the followers of Jesus would suffer great persecution and hatred from the nations of the world. Many believers would fall away and betray others. False teachers would lead many astray and lawlessness would increase. But the true believers would endure and preach the Gospel to all nations and be saved!

Psalm 10:17 “O Lord, You hear the desire of the afflicted; You will strengthen their heart; You will incline Your ear. . .”

Faith confession and prayer: Lord, thank You for Your call to preach the Gospel to all nations before the end of the age. Fill me with power and strengthen my heart to endure and hasten Your return through obedience!

Micah 3:8 “But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.”

The great separation!

Scripture reading for August 3rd: Amos 1-3, Matthew 13

Key Scriptures: Matthew 13:47-50 “”Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.””

Jesus taught in parables so that those who heard would have to think and seek out the meaning. Those with ears would hear the truth and those with hard hearts would not understand or come to the wrong conclusion. This prophetic parable of the fishing net cast into the sea should have been easily understood around the Sea of Galilee. Good fish and inedible fish are caught in the net. They are sorted out and the good are kept and the inedible are cast away. The kingdom of heaven will catch men but not all will be “good.” The end of the age will bring a great separation!

Amos 3:7 “For the Lord God does nothing without revealing His secret to His servants the prophets.”

Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for prophetic truth in Your parables. Help me to cast a clear Gospel message and cast the net to bring men and women into the kingdom. May all receive Your grace through Jesus Christ so as not to be cast away!

Jesus the Risen Lord!

Scripture reading for February 9th:  Matthew 28

“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.  There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.  His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.  The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.  The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; He is risen, just as He said.””  (Matthew 28:1-6)   This angelic visitation brought a violent earthquake and terror to those soldiers guarding the tomb!  The stone was rolled back while they were ‘like dead men’.  This angel spoke to the women who had followed Jesus and told them not to be afraid but to tell the disciples!

As they hurried away, Jesus Himself met them with a greeting!  They fell at His feet and worshiped!  He also assured them and calmed their fears, sending them to the disciples.  The guards, however, ran to the chief priests and told them what had happened.  They devised a plan and a story to cover up the angel’s appearance and empty tomb!  The lie was widely circulated and even today is believed by those with hard hearts!

Matthew records Jesus’ final instructions to His disciples:  “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:18-20)

Beware and prepare!

Scripture reading for October 13th: Matthew 24-25

These chapters of Matthew contain the last major teaching of Jesus to his disciples as recorded by this Gospel writer.  Jesus remarked to His disciples about how not one stone would be left upon another at the temple. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” (Matthew 24:2-5)

Deception will be a mark of the last days before the return of Jesus Christ.  The world we live in today is full of counterfeit religions and numerous cults that claim that they are the only way to God.  Jesus warned of wars among the nations.  There would also be famines and earthquakes in numerous places and great distress.   Betrayal and hatred toward God’s people will be common.  Many will fall away from following Jesus and their love for God will grow cold.  (Matthew 24:6-13)

Jesus emphatically taught that no one would know the day or hour of His return.  (Matthew 24:36)  It would be like the days of Noah when the flood suddenly swept the world of that time away.  It would be like a thief coming to a house at night.  It would be like a master coming back to find his servant neglecting his duties and doing evil.   Each person should be in a state of readiness at all times, for Jesus will come back at a time when everyone least expects it.

To illustrate this point, Jesus told two parables.  The first was about the ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom.  Five were foolish and five others were wise.  The foolish ones took their lamps, but did not take any oil for them.  The wise took oil along for their lamps and were ready.  The bridegroom was delayed and they all fell asleep.  The midnight cry woke them up to prepare for his arrival.  Only the wise were prepared and got to go with the bridegroom to the wedding feast.

Our Lord emphasized the need to be read for the return of our Bridegroom, Jesus  Christ.  He could come at any time.  May this message cause you to beware and prepare!

The End of the Age!

Scripture reading for February 4th: Matthew 24:1-28, Psalm 24, Proverbs 7:1-5

As Jesus was nearing the end of His time on earth, He took time to answer the disciple’s questions concerning events that would take place in the future.  One characteristic of our great God is that He knows the end from the beginning.  He has perfect knowledge of future events and has even written them down, proving that He alone is God.  That is the nature of prophesy and Jesus spoke prophetically to His close followers.

They had two questions following His statement that the temple in Jerusalem would be torn down, with not one stone left upon another.  They wanted to know when this would happen and what would be the signs leading up to this event and the end of the age.  “Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.  For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.  You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed.  Such things  must happen, bu the end is still to come.  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.  These are the beginnings of birth pains.” (Matthew 24:4-8)

Jesus answered these questions with a straight-forward warning against deception.  Deception would be a sign of the coming end of the age.  There would be religious deception coming from people who came in His name, but were really not His.   These people would be working to deceive many people.  This would require watchfulness and discernment.  The disciples must know what was real and be able to spot these deceivers.  They would need to exercise caution and stay close to the Lord Himself.

There would also be turmoil in the world among the nations and peoples.  Wars and rumors of wars would abound and earthquakes and famines would bring destruction and pain to many people.  These would be just the beginning of this time of the end.  It would be like labor pains in a woman ready to give birth.  The time would be near and those who had spiritual eyes could see and know what it would be like.  Do you see signs of the end of the age?  Are you ready for Jesus’ return?

Don’t weed God’s field!

Scripture reading for January 18th: Matthew 13:24-43

Jesus continued His teaching using other parables. Jesus had told them that He was the farmer who was sowing the message of the kingdom of heaven.  Those who received the seed of this message and acted on it would produce a crop  that He would harvest one day.  His followers were still wondering what this kingdom of heaven would look  like so Jesus gave them another parable.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.  But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.  When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.  The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field?  Where then did the weeds come from?’  “An enemy did this,’ he replied.”  “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?'”  “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest.  At that time I will tell the harvesters:  First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'” Matthew 13:24-30

Jesus gave an explanation to those who asked.  The enemy was Satan and he sowed his followers into the same field that God had sowed with the good seed.  As the harvest ripened, the weeds became evident.  Some servants came to God and asked about removing the weeds.  God told them He would take care of that at the end of the age.  At that time the angels would pull the weeds and bundle them for burning in the fiery furnace.  There would be weeping and gnashing of teeth because the weeds were really lost souls under the control of Satan.  The righteous would enjoy the kingdom of light in the presence of the Father for ever.  Those with ears were encouraged to hear!  (Matthew 13:32-43)

Jesus’ message was simple: there are only “wheat” and “weeds”!  There will be a final harvest!  Angels will gather the “weeds” for burning and take the “wheat” into the kingdom.  We who follow Jesus must be busy sowing the message of eternal life, not trying to weed the field!  If you have ears, listen!
