Ezekiel’s graphic warning!

Scripture reading for August 22nd: Ezekiel 16-19

In this chapter God explained how He saw the nation of Israel and how they were given life by Him.  They had been born in sin and were covered with iniquity but God had mercy on them.  God Himself had given the command “Live” and they received life!  (Ezekiel 16:6-7)  They grew up to become His beautiful bride and He clothed them in fine linen clothes and gave them fine jewelry.  They were given ear rings and nose rings and even a crown for their head.  They were to be a bride of royalty!  (Ezekiel 16:10-14)  In fact they became His queen  and their fame spread among the nations!

Then a strange thing happened.  God’s Queen decided to become a prostitute.  She had become proud and trusted in her beauty and fame!  She went up to the high places and  spread her beautiful garments and offering sexual favors to all who passed by.  She took some of her expensive jewelry and made cheap idols and engaged in prostitution with them!  (Ezekiel 16:15-18)  She even offered her sons and daughters to the idols by sacrificing them in the fires!  What a strange and twisted mind this beautiful woman had!

On top of all that, instead of being paid by her lovers, she paid them to come to her!  (Ezekiel 16:32-34)  She had paid for favors from the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians and even the Philistines!  All of this behavior would bring wrath upon His people!  (Ezekiel 16:37-40)  She would reap the fruit of her illicit activities by being handed over to her lovers.  Those lovers would strip her and leave  her naked and bring destruction on the land.  God’s hope was to turn His Queen back to Him again.

As we think about this story, we must heed its warning!  Many in the church today are compromising their devotion to Christ and His Holy word.  They are justifying their sexual idolatry and still claim to belong to Christ.  They throw their children into the fire by using abortion to free themselves from the responsibility of raising godly offspring.  They claim God’s favor and blessing when they are really under His wrath because they have never truly repented. (Romans 1:18-20)  Maybe it’s time for another reading of this graphic prophetic warning!

An X-rated prophetic warning!

Scripture reading for August 21st: Ezekiel 16-19

How many of you are reading this just to find out what was “x-rated” in the Bible?  Ezekiel 16 should contain an “x-rated” warning for graphic and explicit sexual content and violence.  God knew how to use the street language of the day to get the attention of the people.  The Message Bible by Eugene Peterson gives a graphic reading that made my adult Bible class blush as I read it to them!.

God explained how He saw the nation of Israel and how He had given them life through His grace.  Through Adam, they had been born in sin and were covered with iniquity.  God in His mercy had given the command “Live” and they received life!  (Ezekiel 16:6-7)  They grew up to become His beautiful bride and He clothed them in fine linen clothes and gave them fine jewelry.  They were given ear rings and nose rings and even a crown for their head as His Queen!  (Ezekiel 16:10-14)

Then a strange thing happened: God’s Queen decided to become a prostitute.  In her pride, she went up to the high places and  spread her beautiful garments and offered sexual favors to all who passed by.

All of this behavior was going to bring God’s wrath upon His people!  (Ezekiel 16:37-40)  She would be handed over to her lovers and they would strip her and bring destruction on the land.  God’s desire was to turn His Queen back to Him again.

Many in the church today are compromising their devotion to Christ and His holy word.  They are justifying their illicit sexual idolatry and claiming to belong to Christ.  They throw their children into the fire by using abortion to get rid of unwanted responsibility.  They claim God’s favor and blessing when they are really under His wrath because they have never truly repented. (Romans 1:18-20)  Maybe it’s time for another reading of this x-rated prophetic warning!

Prophet of Personal Responsibility!

Scripture reading for August 23rd: Ezekiel 16-19

There was a proverb in Israel that went something like this, “The fathers eat the sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.” (Ezekiel 18:2b)  Through Ezekiel, God brought this popular myth into question.  To God, each person belonged to Him and answered to Him personally.  He judged each person on their own conduct and either rewarded or punished them accordingly.

We have a teaching in Pentecostal circles today that speaks of “generational” curses.  It goes something like this: if your father or mother was involved in alcoholism, for example, you might have this “curse” passed on down to you.  This curse must be broken off for you to be free.  Now we know that there might be some truth in this; if there is a genetic disposition in your family for alcoholism, you may have that, too.  But what God was teaching here is different.  Each person is responsible before Him for their actions and choices.  We are not victims of our family tree or some generational curse.  We choose either to obey and follow God, or to disobey and rebel against God.  We are free moral agents with the ability to choose.

God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but would rather that they repent and live.  (Ezekiel 18:23)  Repentance requires taking personal responsibility for our sins, not blaming someone else.  Repentance requires turning from the sin and then doing what God commands.  It is very simple and yet so profound.  God is merciful and desires to show mercy rather than judge.  When we fail to repent, He must judge us!  (Ezekiel 18:26-28)

“Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign Lord.  Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.  Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit.  Why will you die, O house of Israel?  For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone.” (Ezekiel 18:30-32)

Sin is man’s major downfall.  We have all sinned and need God’s mercy.  (Romans 3:23)  God has sent Jesus Christ to take away our sins in the sacrifice of His body on the Cross of Calvary.  Why not take a moment and confess your faith in Jesus Christ and the cross?  God loves to show mercy!

x-rated prophetic warning!

Scripture reading for August 22nd: Ezekiel 16-19

How many of you are reading this just to find out what was “x-rated” in the Bible?  Ezekiel 16 should contain an “x-rated” warning for graphic and explicit sexual content and violence.  God knows how to use the street language of the day to get the attention of the people.  If you really want the street language in today’s vernacular, you should read this passage in the Message Bible by Eugene Peterson.  I read it to my adult Bible class and many were blushing!

In this chapter God explains how He saw the nation of Israel and how they were given life by Him.

God stated that she had become proud and trusted in her beauty and fame!  She went up to the high places and  spread her beautiful garments and offered sexual favors to all who passed by.  She took some of her expensive jewelry and made cheap idols and engaged in prostitution with them!  Sex with an idol can’t be too fulfilling!  (Ezekiel 16:15-18)  She worshiped her idols by offering the food God provided to them in idolatrous worship!  She even offered her sons and daughters to the idols by sacrificing them in the fires!  What a strange and twisted mind this beautiful woman had!

On top of all that, instead of being paid by her lovers, she paid them to come to her!  It was a strange kind of prostitution!  (Ezekiel 16:32-34)  She had paid for favors from the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians and even the Philistines!  All of this behavior was going to bring God’s wrath and the curse of sin upon His people!  (Ezekiel 16:37-40)  She would reap the fruit of her illicit activities by being handed over to her lovers.  Those lovers would strip her and leave  her naked and bare and bring destruction on the land and houses.  God’s hope was to turn His Queen back to Him again.

As we think about this story, we can listen and be warned ourselves.  Many in the church today are compromising their devotion to Christ and His holy word.  They are justifying their illicit sexual idolatry and claiming to belong to Christ.  They throw their children into the fire by using abortion to satisfy their need to be able to choose not to be responsible for an unwanted child from their immorality.  They claim God’s favor and blessing when they are really under His wrath because they have never truly repented. (Romans 1:18-20)  Maybe it’s time for another reading of this x-rated prophetic warning!
