Scripture reading for June 3rd: Philippians 3
Key Scriptures: Philippians 3:7-11 “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith--that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.”
Paul’s letter to the Philippians from jail contains amazingly insight into his own thinking in light of possible death by execution. Paul’s clearly stated desire was to know Jesus Christ in a deeper and fuller way. He had suffered the loss of his freedom and possessions, but desired to obtain that which could not be taken from him. He longed for righteousness that came from faith in Jesus. The righteousness he sought was a gift from God, not obtained by works of the law or human effort. Paul was willing to share in Christ’s sufferings becoming like Him in His death so that, like Jesus, he also would be raised from death. He hadn’t yet laid hold of this, but he was pressing on to know Christ Jesus and by faith trusting Christ’s promise of eternal life!
Philippians 3:13-14 “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what likes behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for revealing Yourself to me and all who know You. Help me to hold the things of this world lightly and to lay hold of that for which You have laid hold of me. I stretch my heart towards knowing You and the fellowship of Your sufferings and the prize of eternal life in Your presence. Give me open doors to share this Gospel with the lost.
Philippians 3:20-21 “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body, by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to Himself.”
