It is Finished
Scripture reading for May 1st: 1st Kings 14-17, John 19
Key Scriptures: John 19:28-30 “After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture),”I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to His mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
Jesus, Son of God, Son of David, was obedient unto death on the cross. He hung there until He had accomplished everything written in Scripture, and then announced the completion of His task. He gave His life blood and then His spirit. His heart was fully committed to the Father.
1st Kings 15:11, 14-15 “And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as David his father had done. . . .But the high places were not taken away. Nevertheless, the heart of Asa was wholly true to the Lord all his days. And he brought into the house of the Lord the sacred gifts of his father and his own sacred gifts, silver and gold and vessels.”
Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Jesus to finish the work of salvation and fulfill Scripture. Help me to please You and fully commit to You all my days. Amen.
Declare not Deny!
Scripture reading for April 30th: 1st Kings 11-13, John 18
Key Scriptures: John 18:25-27 “Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it and said “I am not.” One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.”
Jesus had predicted the denial and falling away of all His disciples. He had also predicted the betrayal by one, Judas. Even those who walked with Jesus, saw the miracles, heard His teaching and knew Him turned away during Jesus’ final hours. How we need His grace!
1st Kings 11:3-4 “He (Solomon)had 700 wives and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father.”
Prayer: Lord, thank You for praying for me. Help me to declare You, not deny You, before men and maintain a fully committed heart, like the heart of Jesus, David’s Son and the Son of God. Amen.
Thankful for God’s Eyes!
Scripture reading for April 27th: 2nd Chronicles 13-16
Key Scriptures: 2nd Chronicles 16:8-9 “Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on the Lord, He delivered them into your hand. For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.”
God, in great love, sent a prophet to help King Asa see and understand his error of relying on a foreign king and army, instead of the Lord. Hopefully Asa would repent and walk with the Lord in victory. King Asa was not sold out in his heart to the Lord and fully committed to Him, so he became angry and put the prophet in prison! He soon lost his health and life!
Thankful that God sees all: “Nothing in all creation is hidden from His (God’s) sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13)
Thankful for a fully committed heart!
Scripture reading for April 4th: 1st Kings 11-15
Key Scriptures: 1st Kings 15:11-15 “Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done. He expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his fathers had made. He even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive Asherah pole. Asa cut the pole down and burned it in the Kidron valley. Although he did not remove the high places, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life.”
The book of Kings recorded the lives of leaders that followed King David in leading Israel. Many of them went astray. King Asa, however, followed in David’s footsteps and did right in God’s eyes. He rid the land of idols and even removed his own grandmother from a position of prominence because of idolatry. His heart was “fully committed to the Lord!”
Thankful for Jesus’ full commitment: Jesus Christ, Son of God and son of David, was fully committed to God! “Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. I have brought You glory on earth by completing the work You gave me to do.” (John 17:3-4)
