In the beginning: God! (Father, Son, Holy Spirit)
Scripture reading for January 2nd: Genesis 1-2, Psalm 19, Mark 1 (5 day Chronological reading plan from www.BibleClassMaterial.cogm)
Key Scriptures: Genesis 1:1-3 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”
God is there in the beginning as the great “I AM.” He created everything by His powerful Word (Son) out of nothing through the hovering Holy Spirit. At the beginning of Mark’s Gospel, thought to be the first written of New Testament accounts, we have Jesus Christ introduced by God the Father as He comes up out of the waters of the Jordan. The Holy Spirit descended upon Him like a dove fluttering from a torn-open heaven. God declares that Jesus is His beloved Son, pleasing to Him!
Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, Son of God, We call out to the lost world today in Your Name to hear and receive the simple truth of One true God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Creator of heaven and earth. Holy Spirit, hover over Your Word and bring light in Jesus Christ.
Mark 1:1,9-11 “The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. . . . .In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when He came up out of the water, immediately He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.”
Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.”
Connect with God by reading the Bible in 2014!
Scripture reading for January 1, 2014: Genesis 1-2
The journey begins for 2014! Our theme this year at Good Shepherd Church is “Connect”! It is my desire to provide daily insights from our reading so we can better “connect” with God. This journey will take us from Genesis through Revelation by the end of 2014, the Lord willing!
Moses recorded the first five books of the Old Testament about 1500 years before Christ. According to Scripture, he was moved on by the Holy Spirit and wrote down the words given him by God. (2nd Peter 1:19-21) Without this record, we could only speculate about where we came from and why we are here.
God made everything that exists simply by speaking! As He spoke, out of nothing, creation appeared! Psalm 33:6 states: “By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” We serve a God who breathes out stars, constellations, and galaxies that stretch out for countless millions of light years in every direction from the earth! His powerful Words connect Him with all creation as its source!
Even more amazing is man himself! God made man in His own image and designed him for a relationship–a connection! Man was to walk and talk with God and share ruler-ship of His creation. God also created man as male and female for a ‘connection’ with each other! His design has brought companionship and pleasure to man, who could not find what he needed with any of the animals! We are special and unique! Thank Him for your uniqueness and His purpose for your life. Invite Him to walk with you today and this year! It is the most exciting adventure you will ever experience! In His Love, Pastor John
“In the beginning, God!”
Scripture reading for January 2nd: Genesis 1-2
The journey begins in God’s Word for another exciting year! May the Lord bless your new year and walk with you each step of the way!
I am so thankful that you have chosen to trek with me through the Bible again this year. We are starting at the beginning and I just love these first chapters of Genesis. To think that Moses recorded this for us about 1500 years before Christ is amazing! According to Scripture, he was moved on by the Holy Spirit and wrote down a message given him by God. (2nd Peter 1:19-21) This record of creation is given to us by the only One who was there to witness it all! Without this record, we could only speculate about where we came from and why we are here. In fact, that kind of speculation is what is going on with many intellectuals today who deny God exists or that He can be known by us. It is being taught in our school systems to our children and they are confused!
God made all that is simply by speaking! What powerful words! Even more amazing was man himself! Man made in the image of God! Man walked with God and shared rulership of creation with God. We are special and unique! Thank Him for your uniqueness and His purpose for your life. Invite Him to walk with you today and this year! It will be the most exciting way to begin a new year!
Then God said, “let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created them.”–Genesis 2:26-27
The breath of Life!
Scripture reading for January 1st: Genesis 1-2
Prayer for this year’s journey:
Dear Father in heaven,
Thank You for Your love and the breath of life in me. I believe that Jesus Christ, my Savior, will come back soon. I want to be ready and be doing Your will when He arrives. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and empower me to know You and hear your voice. Teach me how to love others and walk in Your supernatural power and grace. Give me discernment and protection from the forces of Satan that would hinder me. May I glorify You with every breath! In Jesus Name, Amen!
How did life begin? Where does life come from? What is the significance of a human life? These are questions that men have pondered over the centuries. Without God’s help, these questions end up with man’s speculation or best guess based on the historical record, careful observation, and idealogical posturing. With God’s help, we begin to have some real understanding and sound answers that help us to navigate through life successfully. As we begin another year and another decade, we again open God’s word to read through it and ponder the thoughts of God.
“In the beginning God” is how the Bible opens. (Genesis 1:1) God is the beginning of everything! He is the source of all life! He began all life from His own infinite life! He is the “Living God” who is alive forever more! (Revelation 1:18)
The Spirit of God is associated with wind or breath. We see the Spirit of God hovering over the surface of the waters of the newly formed earth. (Genesis 1:2) The next verse tells of God speaking, “Let there be light!” Words are formed by breath moving over vocal chords and lips and tongue. God’s word from His mouth released tremendous creative power and light sprang forth! Stars and galaxies came from the breath of His mouth! (Psalm 33:6)
After creating the earth and heavens and all they contain, God turned His creative breath towards making a being in His own image and likeness. A man was formed by God from the dust of the earth with the purpose of ruling and tending the earth. God then breathed into the man the “breath of life” and he became an eternally living being. Man’s first contact with God was face to Face, mouth to Mouth! Lord breathe on me!
