Scripture reading for July 13th: 1st Corinthians 5
“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of you fellowship the man who did this? Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present. When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.” (1st Corinthians 5:1-5)
Paul had received a reliable report of serious sexual sin. The church had done nothing to deal with the offender and the Apostle wrote to help them deal with this in a way that would hopefully be redemptive in the long run. He instructed the church to put the man out of fellowship and to have nothing to do with him. This man claimed to be a brother in Christ, but was acting in the flesh. Unbelievers could be expected to sin but not a brother in the Lord. As they put him out of the church, they were to turn him over to Satan. This act was done in faith that the man would soon experience again the torment and condemnation of the Devil and truly repent before his time on earth was over. Believers are to judge those inside the church and take appropriate action to keep the leaven of sin from defiling many!
