Learning to rely on God

Scripture reading for August 23rd: 2nd Corinthians 1, Psalm 18, Proverbs 13

2nd Corinthians 1: 8-11 “For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God Who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. On Him we have set our hope that He will deliver us again. You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.”

As believers, we don’t get a pass on suffering or persecution. Paul and his ministry team went through a trial where they despaired of life itself. They felt under the sentence of death and that there was no escape. However, God strengthened them and delivered them from the deadly peril. It was Paul’s faith in God that caused him to declare that God would do it again as well. But Paul encouraged the believers to pray for them and bring help as many agreed together. This would bring thanksgiving from those helped through the prayers. Prayer is an amazing help and comfort to those in despairing trials. God is faithful to hear and answer us and those praying for us and with us. To Him be all glory in heaven and on earth!

Psalm 18:4-6 “The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry to Him reached His ears.”

Prayer: Father God, thank You for the testimony of these who have gone before me and have suffered in great despair. Your promise of hearing our prayers and delivering us brings comfort and faith. I pray for those in my life that I know are going through despairing trials and what looks hopeless. Use me to pray for them and to encourage them that You are faithful. Thank You for Your amazing faithfulness to us!

Proverbs 13:21 “Disaster pursues sinners, but the righteous are rewarded with good.”

Repentance leading to Life!

Scripture reading for April 28th: 1st Samuel 15-16, 1st Chronicles 1, Psalm 39, Acts 11

Acts 11: 13-18 “And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter: he will declare to you a message by with you will be saved, you and all your household.’ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the Word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave the same Gift to them as He gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “‘Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.””

The early church leaders, being trained as Jews, often had trouble grasping God’s plan to save Gentiles. They had been taught that they must avoid the Gentiles because they were ‘uncircumcised’ and ‘unclean’. God had to give Peter a vision of a sheet with unclean foods on it coming down from heaven with the command to eat. He then instructed Peter to go to Cornelius’ house and Peter obeyed, taking other Jewish believers with him. When Peter shared the Gospel there, God poured the Holy Spirit out with the evidence of speaking in tongues. This silenced the resistance and broadened the Jewish believers understanding of God’s heart to reach both Jew and Gentile! He hears all cries for help and salvation!

Psalm 39:12-13 “Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not Your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers. Look away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more!”

Prayer: Father God, thank You for Your patience and care for all people, regardless of nationality or social status. Thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the baptism of the Holy Spirit, empowering us to pray and praise Your Name and share the Gospel message. Thank You for bringing repentance leading to eternal life to me and all who will receive the Good News of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior!

1st Samuel 16:6-7 “When they came, he looked on Eliab and though, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.””

Have faith in God!

Scripture reading for June 11th:  Ezra 6-8, Acts 27

Key Scriptures:  Acts 27:22-25  “Yet now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.  For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar.  And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.  So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told.”

Paul was aboard a ship caught in a terrible storm.  All despaired of life, expecting to drown at sea.  But Paul was visited by an angel who gave him a Word from God.  All would be saved but the ship would be lost.  They were not to be afraid!

Ezra 8:22-23 “For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way; since we had told the king, “The hand of our God is for good on all who seek Him, and the power of His wrath is against all who forsake Him.”  So we fasted and implored our God for this, and He listened to our entreaty.”

Prayer:  Lord, thank You for listening to the prayers of your people.  You are awesome and we have faith in Your Word.  Amen.

Rejoice in the Lord!

Scripture reading for March 24th:  2nd Samuel 2-6

Key Scriptures:  2nd Samuel 5:18-20 “Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines?  Will You hand them over to me?”  The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely hand the Philistines over to you.”  So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them.  He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.”

After being anointed as Israel’s king, David came under attack from the Philistines.  He inquired of the Lord for directions and help and God answered faithfully!  David gave God the credit for their defeat!

Rejoicing in the Lord:  We can rejoice in the Lord and be anxious about nothing!  God hears and answers!  “Humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.  Cast all you anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”  (1st Peter 5:6-7)

Prayer and God’s providence!

Scripture reading for January 10th:  Genesis 23-27

Key Scriptures:  Genesis 24:12-15  “Then he prayed, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.  See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.  May it be that when I say to a girl, ‘Please let down your jar that I any have a drink,’ and she says, “Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’–let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.  By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”  Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder.”

God hears and answers prayer.  Abraham was getting old and Isaac, his son needed a wife.  Abraham sent his chief servant on a mission to find a wife from among his own kinsmen.  The servant prayed for God’s guidance and favor.  God answered before he could finish the prayer!

Cultivating thankfulness:  Believers give thanks for all things and know that God hears and answers prayer!  “For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”  (Matthew 7:8)
