Scripture reading for June 5th: Psalms 7-12
God’s people have always been under attack by the enemy of their soul, Satan. Satan hates godly people because they won’t bow to him and do evil. Those Satan has under his sway are used to steal, kill, and destroy and they speak one language: lie! (John 8:44) God’s people are not violent and slanderous. They don’t do back to others the evil that is done to them. However, they must protect themselves and their families from the attacks of those under Satan’s command. The psalms give us great insight into how godly people have cast these cares on God and asked for His help!
“O Lord my God, I take refuge in You; save and deliver me from all who pursue me, or they will tear me like a lion and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me.” (Psalm 7:1-2) Running to God in prayer, God’s people would pray or sing of their faith in God as their protector. They depended on Him and His power to save and deliver them. They viewed their enemies as ferocious beasts attacking them and themselves as powerless without God’s help!
“Arise, O Lord, in your anger; rise up against the rage of my enemies. Awake, my God; decree justice.” (Psalm 7:6) God was understood to be angry at the wicked every day. (Psalm 7:11) As a just judge, He would punish those who broke His law and would protect and vindicate those under His Law. Sometimes, it seemed like God was not aware of the wicked and the Psalmist calls for God to “arise” or “awake” to their defense.
“Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.” . . .”But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.” (Psalm 7:12,14-15) God alone can help the helpless! He is their hope and protector. He sees what is done in darkness and brings justice to those oppressed! Vengeance belongs to the Lord alone!
“The Lord is King forever and ever; the nations perish from his land.” (Psalm 7:16) This hymn of petition and praise concludes with victorious faith! Thanks be to God for the victory!
