Sunday rest: Hebrews 5-7
Dear Friends,
Greetings on another day of rest. This is the season of Advent. As we prepare our hearts, we are filled with joy anticipating the coming of Jesus Christ. This time He will come with the hosts of heaven and we who believe in Him will be caught up to meet Him in the air! So shall we ever be with the Lord!
Today’s reading to help us finish on time comes from Hebrews 5-7. Here are a few of my favorite scriptures from this section. I hope that they will speak to you of the character and love of Jesus Christ! May they inspire joy on this day of rest.
“No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was. So Christ also did not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to Him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” And He says in another place, ” You are a Priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 5:4-6
“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One Who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered and , once made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him and was designated by God to be High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 5:7-10
“God did this so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, Who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a High Priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 6:18-20
“Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.” Hebrews 7:23-25

Scripture reading for January 29th: Exodus 28-31
Exodus 28:36 “You shall make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet, ‘Holy to the Lord,’
A priest’s job is to mediate between men and God. Men who are dealing with God must be holy and proper. If those assigned and prepared for this job were not obedient, death could result and did on occasion! (Leviticus 10:1-6) Just as God gave great detail in how his Tabernacle would be built, He also gave great detail about the clothing of the men who would serve as priests in His house!
The turban for Aaron’s head was made of fine linen. It had a special gold plate with “Holy to the Lord” engraved on it. Aaron was to wear that plate on the front of his turban whenever he ministered. (Exodus 28:36-39) This turban designated a head and mind dedicated to the holy purposes and Word of the Lord. The priest was to be consecrated to God.
He was given a breastplate to wear as well. On this square breastplate were to be placed twelve precious stones in four rows of three. These precious stones were to be engraved with the twelve names of the tribes of Israel. This signified that the High Priest would bear the names of God’s people before Him. Two other stones, the urim and thummin were also in the breastplate, right over Aaron’s heart. (Exodus 28:30) These stones were to enable Aaron to make godly decisions in accordance with God’s will. They have to do with the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden only in God.
So it is that Jesus Christ is our High Priest forever living to make intercession for us! (Hebrews 7:23-25) He carries our names on His breastplate like precious stones over His heart. In Him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge! (Colossians 2:2-3) He stands as the only mediator between God and man. (1st Timothy 2:5-6) Only Jesus is dressed to meet with God on our behalf!
What does God see engraved on my forehead? Do I understand the priesthood of believers and am I dressed to meet with God?
The Perfect Mediator!

Key Scriptures: Hebrews 7:23-25 “The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but He holds His priesthood permanently, because He continues forever. Consequently, He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
The writer of Hebrews shows that Jesus is the perfect High Priest, after the order of Melchizedek. His priesthood is eternal and He always lives to make intercession for those who come to God through Him. In fact, He is the only Mediator between God and man! We are thankful, because all of us humans need a Mediator because we have all sinned! Our Mediator, Jesus, will keep us safe when the end comes!
Jeremiah 5:30-31 “An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land: the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; My people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?”
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your eternal intercession for me. Help me to share Your love with those opposed to You so they won’t be condemned in the coming judgment. Amen.
