Honor God and your father!

Scripture reading for March 29: 2nd Samuel 15-18

“Honor your father and your mother,  as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” Deuteronomy 5:16

“This is what the Lord says; ‘out of your own household I am going to bring calamity upon you.  Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.  You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel'”.( 2nd Samuel 12:11-12)

God’s Word never returns void and the one who chooses to go against it does so to their peril.  King David disobeyed God’s command against adultery and although he was forgiven, he reaped what he had sown in his own household.  Absalom, a son of King David, chose to rebel against his own father and try to take the throne of Israel.  His story has a boastful beginning and a sad ending.

Absalom was a master politician.  He made all kinds of promises to win the hearts of the people.  His heart was plotting a take-over of his own father’s throne and he did it by flattery and empty promises.  (2nd Samuel 15:4-6) He secretly set himself up as king and secretly won over David’s trusted counselor, Ahithophel, who joined in the conspiracy.  He was a man full of pride and self-promotion who would do anything to gain power. Sounds like some of our politicians today!

Ahithophel advised Absalom to take his father’s concubines and sleep with them in front of all Israel.  This appealed to this rebel son and he willingly broke God’s commands and dishonored himself and his father, not to mention God!  In doing so, he fulfilled Nathan’s word to King David as his own father was confronted with his own sin of adultery!  (2nd Samuel 16:20-22) Absalom’s brief rebellion ended with his tragic death.

Are you honoring God by obeying His commandments in the area of proper sexual conduct? Are you honoring your own father and mother and their example and instruction? Today is a day of mercy.

Sunday rest and reflection!

Sunday July 27th, 2014

Dear Friends,

When we gather on the first day of the week, we declare our trust and dependence on God as our source of strength and hope!  We acknowledge of our fear and respect of His great, love, and protection.  In Him alone is safety and security, not in our money, our national military, or our own knowledge.   We come together to worship Him, offer our tithes to support His world-wide mission to reach the lost, and to hear His Word!

May the Lord bless you today with faith that moves you to join with those worshiping our Lord!  Faith without corresponding actions is dead!

In His Love,  Pastor John and Mary

God at work to accomplish His will!

Scripture reading for May 14th: Esther 1-2

The story of Esther takes place in Persia during the days of Ezra and Nehemiah when the Jews were rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem.  It never mentions the name of God, but God’s presence is implied and felt throughout the story.  It is the story of ordinary Jewish people who are trying to be faithful to their God while they live in a foreign land.

This story begins with a king of Persia who liked to drink, boast of his wealth, and evidently his women, too!  He called for his beautiful queen, Vashti, to come and display herself before the nobles who were drinking with her husband.  Queen Vashti refused to do what he asked.  The king was furious and sought counsel as to what to do about this offense.  It was decided that she must be made a public example so that other women would not get the idea that they could disobey their husbands and show them disrespect.  Queen Vashti was removed from her royal position, never to come into the king’s presence again!  A search was made for the most beautiful and suitable woman to take the queen’s place.  God exalted Esther, a Jew, to this place of honor!

In today’s culture, what Vashti did would have been totally acceptable!  She did not want to be eye candy for a group of men that were already inflamed by wine.   But in that culture, women were expected to be totally obedient to their husbands and disrespect (disobedience) was not tolerated!  In the pagan culture, all the men in power felt threatened by the queen’s action!  They took action to protect themselves and their way of life. (Esther 1:18-20)

But God used the culture of that day to accomplish his purposes.  He removed Vashti, protecting her for her stand of faith.  He placed Esther in the place of influence and gave her favor in order to bring about the deliverance of all his people!  (Esther 2:17)  As a godly Jew, Esther knew how to obey the king and still remain loyal to her God.  By faith she became to all an example  of a woman true to her people and to her God!
