Scripture reading for August 31st: Isaiah 30-32, 1st Corinthians 5
Key Scriptures: 1st Corinthians 5:9-13 “I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people–not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler–not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.””
There was gross immorality in the church at Corinth. Paul wrote to them concerning the handling of this problem. The world is full of sexual immorality but it should not be in the church. God’s Word is clear concerning this truth. Those who claim to be ‘brothers’ or ‘sisters’ and are living in immorality, idolatry, drunkenness, or other sins are not to be taken into the fellowship of the church unless they repent. Those inside the church must be disciplined by church leadership. God will take care of those outside.
Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for clear instruction for Your church in dealing with gross immorality among those who call themselves believers. Help Your leaders to faithfully apply this instruction.
Isaiah 30:15 “For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling . . .”
