Judging inside Christ’s church

Scripture reading for August 7th: 1st Corinthians 5, Psalm 6, Proverbs 1

1st Corinthians 5: 9-13 “I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people–not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler–not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.””

The Word of God makes it clear that sitting in the place of God and judging others is not right. Only God is righteous and knows how to judge each person as He knows their hearts perfectly and sees all facts. He has given all judgment to His Son, Jesus Christ. However, God has given limited judgment to His people to purge evil from His Church. This judgment is to be exercised based on facts of two or more witnesses. Opportunity to repent and ask for grace is to be given. If there is a refusal to repent, the unrepentant person who claims to be a believer must be put out of the church and association with them cut off. This is to bring them godly sorrow in hopes of repentance and restoration. Sin, like leaven in bread, can infect the whole church if not dealt with. Lord give us grace to hear and obey!

Psalm 6:8-9 “Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer.”

Prayer: Father God, it has been with weeping and pleas for repentance that I have obeyed this passage in Your Word. Thankfully, I have seen fruit of repentance in some but others turned away. I am thankful that all final judgment is given to Jesus Christ, the righteous Judge. Help me and Your church leaders to follow Your instructions to purge evil from Your church and see Your grace draw many to the cross.

Proverbs 1:32-33 “For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”

Serve now, rule eternally

Scripture reading for July 27th: Luke 22, Psalm 149, Proverbs 25

Luke 22: 25-30 “And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the One Who serves. You are those who have stayed with Me in My trial, and I assign to you, as My Father assigned to Me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.””

God’s ways are different than man’s ways. The disciples were arguing about greatness when Jesus spoke plainly to them. They were to be servants here on earth, taking the lowest place, even in leadership positions. Jesus was their example, having just washed their feet! As they remained faithful to humbly serve God and others, they would receive great reward in Jesus’ kingdom. Jesus promised them places at His table and thrones of judgment in the coming eternal kingdom. God truly does take pleasure in His people who prove their faith by humble service and sacrifice! To them eternal rulership and future glory is promised. Praise the Lord!

Psalm 149:4-5, 9 “For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He adorns the humble with salvation. Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds.” . . .“to execute on them the judgment written! This is the honor for all His godly ones. Praise the Lord!”

Prayer: Father God, forgive me for not always humbly serving my brothers and sisters here, especially those who consider me their enemy. Give me a servant’s heart through Your indwelling Holy Spirit. Help me to stay true to You and Your example of servanthood. I am in awe that You would promise me the honor of future rulership and greatness as a reward for faithful servanthood! Amen! Praise the Lord!

Proverbs 25:21-22 “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.”

God’s kindness meant to lead to Repentance!

Scripture reading for May 25th:  2nd Samuel 18-20, Psalm 34, Romans 2

Key Scriptures:   Romans 2:1-5 “Therefore you have no excuse, O man, everyone of you who judges.  For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.  We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.  Do you suppose, O man–you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself–that you will escape the judgment of God?  Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness  and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?  But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.”

Paul carefully explained to the Romans that judging others for sins they were committing would bring God’s wrath.  To them God’s patience was being mistaken for God’s approval of deeds He had stated in His Word as sinful.  These sins were enumerated in Romans chapter one.  Suppressing God’s Word and truth resulted in a downward spiral of ongoing judgment leading to sexual perversion and idolatry.  Failure to repent would lead to eternal wrath!  Beware!  Thankfully, God has kindly provided the way to escape His wrath and the bondage of practicing sin through faith in His Son.

Psalm 34:16  “The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.”

Faith confession and prayer:  Thank You Lord Jesus for Your kindness and patience with me and all sinners, allowing time to repent and believe.  Use me to faithfully declare the Gospel that none may face Your wrath.

2nd Samuel 18:33  “And the king (David) was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept.  And as he went, he said, “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom!  Would I had died instead of you, . .”
