Kingdom generosity!

Scripture reading for March 24th: Luke 6:12-38

God, Himself, is a lavish giver.  Stop and think about each day that you experience!   God supplies all the air you can breathe and more than enough for the other 7 billion humans as well as countless animals and birds!  God supplies food for all His creatures as well, and renews the supply on a regular basis around the earth.  God supplies sunshine to keep our temperatures warm enough to grow and to supply energy for plants to convert to something edible or usable for us.  (Oil, wood, food, etc.)  God has set up the earth to be just the right place for humans and animals to live and thrive.

Not only that, but God has been lavish with His other blessings too.  He loves all men, who are made in His image.  He even loves His enemies and gives lavishly to them their basic needs in spite of their ingratitude and even mocking of His Name. (Luke 6:36)  He is lavish in forgiveness for all who will call upon Him.  Jesus was lavish with healing and driving out evil spirits.  (Luke 6:17-19)

Jesus taught His disciples about the lavish love and mercy of His Father as He healed the sick and cast out evil spirits.  He told them of their blessedness in poverty, hunger, persecution, and weeping!  (Luke 6:20-22)  Theirs would be the kingdom of heaven and all their needs would be totally met in God Himself!

Because of this flow of generosity from God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we who follow Jesus Christ can be generous too!  In fact, we must learn to be extravagantly generous like our Father!  We are to love our enemies and pray for those who would mistreat us!  (Luke 6:27-30)  We are to turn the other cheek to those who would hit us.  We are to give to those who ask for help, doing to others as God has done to you!  We are to be lavish in mercy and forgiveness and careful not to judge or condemn!

Jesus concluded this instruction with a powerful verse:  “Give, and it will be given to you.  A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38)  How is the flow of blessing in your life?  Are you giving it out?
