“Kiss the Son”

Scripture reading for June 4th: Psalms 1-6

Today begins the Psalms.  Psalms are the prayer and worship book of the Bible.  In this collection of poetic writings, we can hear honest declarations of worship, petition, trust, fears, and dependence on God from the hearts of those who loved God and lead others in worship.    As we begin our journey through the Psalms, take a moment to ask God to give you a deeper experience of worship and reverence for Him.

God is the central focus of the Psalms.  God’s law is a source of delight and blessing for those who meditate on it.  (Psalm 1:1-3)  God’s law helps us to walk in the right direction, sit with the right people and stand tall at the judgment.  Meditation on God’s law brings a source of life that brings fruitfulness to those who are tapped into it.  They are prosperous and strong, even in the dry times.  Those who meditate on God’s law are contrasted with the wicked who are likened to chaff.

“Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?  The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against  the Lord and against His Anointed One.”  “Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.”  “The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.” (Psalm 2:1-4)

This second Psalm tells of a world where nations and peoples plot to get rid of God.  They conspire and plot to break His “chains”.  These “chains” are the law of God that tells man of God’s righteous requirements for them. God on the throne laughs at them.  This laughter is not with them, but in derision of their foolish decision.  This anointed King will rule them with an iron rod and dash them like pottery!

This Psalm speaks of the Lord and His “Anointed One“, later in the Psalm called “Son”.  God takes the title of “Father” and states emphatically that He has installed “My King on Zion, My holy hill.”  (Psalm 2:6)  From our perspective, we know this Anointed One is Jesus Christ, God’s only Son.  God sent Him to earth to show man the Father and redeem man from the penalty for his rebellion.  “Kiss the Son” is the remedy for those in Psalm 2 who are plotting and conspiring.  All who take refuge in Him are blessed!
