No wedding garment!
Scripture reading for August 16th: Isaiah 1-3, Psalm 9, Matthew 22
Matthew 22: 11-14 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”
Jesus told the parable of the great king’s wedding feast. This parable was a parable of the kingdom of heaven. The king sent out his servants to invite the guests to his son’s wedding. The guests made excuses so the king sent the servants to gather up any who would willingly attend. As the king viewed the wedding guests, a man without proper wedding garments stood out and he questioned how he was admitted. The man had no excuse as he knew it was the king’s son’s wedding. The consequences were dire–cast out into outer darkness with much weeping and gnashing of teeth. This indicated remorse and an eternally missed opportunity. God sees each person and their heart and will judge with justice!
Psalm 9:7-8 “But the Lord sits enthroned forever; He has established His throne for justice, and He judges the world with righteousness; He judges the people with uprightness.”
Prayer: Father God, we love you and thank You for the invitation to the wedding of Your Son, Jesus Christ! I have put on the wedding garment You provided–the righteousness of Christ Himself through His total obedience and sacrifice. As Your betrothed, use me to invite all nations to this great event and to receive the gift of Christ’s righteousness as their wedding garment.
Isaiah 1:18-20 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
Speechless before the King!

Jesus told another parable about a wedding feast for the son of a king. This king sent his servants to call the invited guests to the wedding feast but they would not come. The invited guests made excuses and had other interests and refused and even killed the king’s servants. The king destroyed them and their city and then invited whoever would come from the highways and byways. The wedding hall was full, but when the king entered he asked one man who had no white wedding garment how he had entered. The man was speechless with no excuse–and suffered a humiliating ejection into outer darkness!
Psalm 9:17 “The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God.”
Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for providing white garments for all included in Your wedding feast. May I never be speechless before You.

Dress for success!

Key Scriptures for over-comers: Matthew 22:11-14 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless. “Then the king told the attendants, ‘tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “For many are invited, but few are chosen.””
Towards the very end of His earthly ministry, Jesus told this parable about a wedding for the king’s son and a guest who came without a proper wedding garment. The man was confronted by the king, and he was without excuse and speechless. The king had him thrown outside, bound hand and foot. Jesus concluded the parable with “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”
This parable speaks to us today about our need to respond properly to the invitation to the wedding feast of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ! We need to accept the wedding garment of His righteousness to be properly clothed and say ‘yes’ to the King’s invitation through His ambassadors, the ‘Church!’ Those who come thinking they are good just as they are will be in for a rude surprise! The only ‘clothes’ come by grace through faith in Jesus Christ! (Ephesians 2:8-9) All are invited to this wedding banquet, but few will chose to come properly dressed!
Observations for over-comers: Over-comers will wear garments of Christ’s righteousness and be watching for the Bridegroom’s return! Some will be surprised and left out! “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12) “I will clothe her priests with salvation and her saints will ever sing for joy.” (Psalm 132:16)
