One Lord, One Church, One Spirit

Scripture reading for June 8th: Ephesians 2, Psalm 114, Proverbs 21

Ephesians 2: 17-22 “And He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the Cornerstone, in Whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In Him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.”

Paul, writing to believers, both Jew and Gentile, sought to enlighten the eyes of their hearts to understand the big picture God had revealed to all mankind through His Son, Jesus Christ. God was building a house and inviting all who would believe on His Son into His household. This privilege of adoption and citizenship would be through the “Cornerstone” of faith in Jesus Christ and repentance. No longer would there be a building, but each believer would be a “dwelling place” for God’s Presence by the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would give both Jew and Gentile access to God as Father. What a “Precious Treasure” is the gift of the Father to all who will believe! God turns our rocky hearts into a river of “Living Water!”

Psalm 114:7-8 “Tremble, O earth, at the Presence of the Lord, at the Presence of the God of Jacob, Who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.”

Prayer: Father God, thank You for turning my hard and flinty heart to a river of “Living Water!” Thank You for the precious Treasure of the Holy Spirit, God the Spirit living in me. Thank You for Christ’s righteousness and eternal life. Use me to publish the “Good News” of one Savior, Jesus Christ, one Holy Spirit from the Father, and one new dwelling place of God, believers who make up Christ’s Body!

Proverbs 21:20-21 “Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling, but a foolish man devours it. Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.”

One Spirit–many gifts!

Scripture reading for September 9th: Isaiah 41-44, 1st Corinthians 12

1st Corinthians 12: 4-11 “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God Who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, Who apportions to each on individually as He wills.”

God the Father has showered His born-again children with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings gifts that are to be used to build up and encourage the Church, Christ’s corporate Body. These gifts are called ‘manifestations’ of the Holy Spirit and include speaking gifts called prophesy, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Other gifts reveal something that is needed by believers–wisdom, knowledge and discerning of spirits. Other gifts empower believers to do God’s works of compassion for the hurting and to evangelize: gifts of faith, various healings, and the working of miracles. Each of these gifts are given by the one Holy Spirit as He wills and God directs for His purposes and glory. Amen!

1st Corinthians 12:27-28 “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the Church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.”

Prayer: Father, thank You for the Gift of the Holy Spirit to live in me. I desire You to use me with any of the gifts of the Holy Spirit to show Your love and compassion to those in Your Body, the Church or to those who are in need of a Savior. Thank You for appointing gift people to the Church and me as a pastor/teacher. Open doors for each member of Your Church through the Holy Spirit to flow in gifts for the common good.

Isaiah 44:2-4 “Thus says the Lord Who made you, Who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob My servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen. for I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring and my blessing on your descendants.”

Concerning spiritual gifts!

Scripture reading for August 19th: 1st Corinthians 12:1-26

The Corinthians evidently loved the spiritual gifts.  But the problem was that they were ignorant of these gifts and how to properly use them to build up the body of Christ.  Many had come from pagan backgrounds.  Paul stressed that only those who could confess “Jesus is Lord” were speaking by the Holy Spirit.

All true spiritual gifts come from the Holy Spirit through relationship with Jesus Christ.  The Holy Spirit gives to each person a manifestation of the Spirit to help in the function of Christ’s body, the church.  (1st Corinthians 12:7)  Paul listed the gifts as follows:  “To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. (1st Corinthians 12:8-10)

We might look at these nine gifts in groups of three’s.  Three gifts reveal something from God’s mind.  The message of wisdom and message of knowledge reveal hidden information to help individuals or the body of Christ understand hidden truth and how to apply it successfully.  The discerning of spirits reveals what spirit is behind something in order to protect or give insight for ministry to an individual or situation.

Three gifts release power into the believer’s life.  The gift of faith enables a person to supernaturally believe God for impossible things.  The gift of miraculous powers works with faith to enable miracles to confirm God’s word and presence when ministering.  The gift of healing brings God’s power to heal sickness and disease, even raise people from death!

Three other gifts are speaking gifts.  Prophecy is the ability to speak God’s mind and word into a person’s life or proclaim God’s will and word in a ministry setting.  The gift of tongues is the ability to speak in an unknown tongue in a public setting.  This must always be interpreted!  The gift of interpretation enables the person to successfully interpret the unknown tongue.

All the gifts are given by the Holy Spirit as He wills.  They are for the edification of Christ’s body.  We are not to be ignorant of His gifts!
