Scripture reading for February 8th: Matthew 25:31-26:13, Psalm 28, Proverbs 8:11-13
Jesus finished His teaching on the signs of the end of the age and again reminded the disciples of the coming Passover and His pending crucifixion. There should have been no doubt as to what He meant as He again emphasized the fact that He would be handed over to those who were plotting to kill Him. (Matthew 26:1-4) The high priest, Caiaphas, assembled the chief priests and elders in his home to find a way to arrest Jesus and kill Him. It is amazing that those who taught the Law of God could so violate the commandments in order to crucify the Son of God.
Jesus was visiting the home of Simon the Leper in Bethany when a woman came and paid Him a visit. This woman had a jar of expensive perfume and poured it on His head. “When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. ‘Why the waste?’ they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. When she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare me for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” (Matthew 26:8-13)
Even though Jesus had again reminded these disciples that He would soon die, there thoughts were on the money that the perfume would buy. They had a good motive, giving to the poor! Jesus rebuked them and stuck up for the unnamed woman. He felt that she had done a beautiful thing to Him. She was evidently more sensitive to the coming events than those who walked with Him every day.
Worship and honoring Jesus should always take priority when He is in our midst. Good works at the neglect of giving the Lord the honor He deserved was a poor choice. What the woman did is now mentioned around the world as Jesus promised her. Another example of His total understanding of future events.
