The Prophet to Obey!
Scripture reading for March 8th: Deuteronomy 18-20, Luke 5
Key Scriptures: Deuteronomy 18:15-18 “”The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers–it is to Him you shall listen–just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said,’Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.'”
Moses was reminding the Israelites just before he was to leave them in Joshua’s hands about what happened at Mt. Sinai forty years earlier. The people had begged Moses to go and hear from God for them and speak to them all that God said. They were so afraid that they might die from God’s presence. Moses told them God would indeed raise up another prophet like him who would speak the Word of God to them. 1500 years later, Jesus walked the earth ministering to the Israelites.
Luke 5:10-11 “. . And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.”
Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your fulfilled promise in Jesus Christ! May we hear and follow His daily call and every Word. Amen.
Thankful for a Prophet like Moses!
Scripture reading for November 10th: Acts 5-9
Key Scriptures: Acts 7:36-39 “He led them out of Egypt and did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert. This is that Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will send a prophet like me from your own people.’ He was in the assembly in the desert, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living words to pass on to us. But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.”
Stephen was brought before the Sanhedrin and charged with blasphemy for preaching Jesus Christ as the Messiah. As Stephen made his defense, he quoted from the Old Testament Scriptures that the Jews had accused him of speaking against. He used Moses’ own words to show that God would send another ‘prophet like Moses’ to do miraculous signs and that he would be rejected just like Moses! God’s Word is always true! They refused to believe and Stephen became the first recorded martyr in the New Testament!
Rejoicing in our true Prophet: “For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put My words in His mouth, and He will tell them everything I command Him. If anyone does not listen to My words that the prophet speaks in My Name, I Myself will call him to account.” (Deuteronomy 18:16-19)
Thankful For Jesus Christ!
Scripture reading for February 22nd: Deuteronomy 16-20
Key Scriptures: Deuteronomy 18:17-19 “The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put My words in His mouth, and He will tell them everything I command Him. If anyone does not listen to My words that the prophet speaks in My Name, I Myself will call him to account.””
The Israelites were afraid to hear God speak. They asked Moses to go up and listen and come and tell them what God had said. God told Moses that this was a good idea. In fact, God had plans to send another prophet just like Moses from among their own brothers. This “Prophet” would tell them everything God commanded and then they would be accountable to God!
Thankful for Jesus: God sent them this “Prophet” through the line of Judah and David. He said and did exactly the commands of His Father, God! “For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything He tells you. Anyone who does not listen to Him will be completely cut off from His people.” (Acts 3:22-23)
