Contrasting life-styles!

Scripture reading for July 5: Proverbs 10-13

Contrast is a literary device used in many of the proverbs to help convey truth.  One of the contrasts is of the righteous man and the wicked man.  The righteous man is wise and fears the Lord and the wicked man is foolish and hates God’s Word and God’s laws.   Let’s  look at these two types of people and try to evaluate our own lives as we read about them.  We can learn from good examples as well as bad!  I often say that if a person is not good for anything else, he can always be a bad example! Ouch!

Let’s look first at the foolish or wicked man.  Proverbs 10:1 states that the foolish son brings grief to his mother.  The foolish man is lazy and sleeps during harvest instead of working. (Proverbs 10:4-5) The wicked man’s mouth is filled with violence and his hatred causes dissension and strife.  They speak perverse things. (Proverbs 10:11-12, 31-32) The wicked earn wages of punishment and poverty.  (Proverbs 10:15-16)  The fool finds pleasure in evil conduct and lives in fear and dread of punishment that is sure to come upon him.  (Proverbs 10:23-24)  The wicked have no hope! (Proverbs 10:28, 11:23)  Their own ways insure judgment and ruin in their lives and in the lives of those around them.  (Proverbs 10:27-29)  The wicked may gain wealth, but it will not help them in the day of judgment! (Proverbs 11:4, 18)  There will be shouts of joy when the wicked perish from the land.  (Proverbs 11:10, 20-21)

The righteous man or wise son is a joy to his father!  (Proverbs 10:1)  His righteousness delivers him from death and hunger and lack.  He is a worker and enjoys plenty because he gathers the crops during harvest season.  (Proverbs 10:3-5)  He is blessed and his memory is a blessing to those he has touched.  (Proverbs 10:6-7)  He is always open to correction and is teachable. (Proverbs 10:17)   His mouth is a fountain of life and wisdom is found on his lips. (Proverbs 10:8-11)   He is a man of integrity and rests securely.  His love covers over many wrongs. (Proverbs 10:12)  He enjoys a long and joyful life because his way is the Lord’s way!  (Proverbs 10:27-29)   He is rescued from trouble and escapes destruction because of his wisdom and faithfulness to the Lord!  His life blesses the city he lives in and he prospers!  (Proverbs 11:10-11)  God delights in the righteous man because his ways are blameless!  He is generous and gives, yet gains even more! (Proverbs 11:20,24-25)  He is a tree of life and wins souls!  (Proverbs 11:30)

Which of these contrasting life-styles have you chosen to walk in? Do you have the fruit of a righteous life-style or that of the wicked?  The choice is yours and today may be your only day to choose!

“Follow Me”

Scripture reading for April 11th: Matthew 4, Psalm 72, Proverbs 10

Matthew 4: 17-23 “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” While walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. And going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him. And He went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.”

Jesus came back in the power of the Holy Spirit from His forty-day encounter with Satan in the wilderness. He immediately began to preach repentance and call people to enter the kingdom of heaven. He began calling disciples from among the fishermen working at the Sea of Galilee. This was the area of Israel where a trade route brought many Gentiles through the area and the area Isaiah had prophesied about a “great light” appearing! Those called to follow Jesus, responded immediately! They were promised by Jesus a new type of ‘fishing’! Jesus then went throughout that area teaching and proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom of heaven and healing and miracles were being done among the people in need of His kingdom! Praise the Lord! The whole earth was being filled with His glory!

Psalm 72:18-19 “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, Who alone has done wondrous things. Blessed be His glorious Name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory! Amen and Amen!”

Prayer: Father God, Thank You for Your amazing call to those first fishermen to follow You and become fishers of men. The amazing love of King Jesus was and is being demonstrated by the covering of sins and offenses against You and the healing of hearts, bodies and souls damaged by sickness and sin. Through Jesus, I have found the fountain of Life! Use me to share the Gospel and Your glory to all! Amen!

Proverbs 10:11-12 “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.”

Let love be genuine!

Scripture reading for June 8th: Proverbs 8-10, Psalm 144, Romans 12

Romans 12: 9-17 “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil: hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil,, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.”

Paul encouraged believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice to God and to renew their minds with His Word. Paul used the last chapters of his letter to explain practically how the Christian walk takes place in a world of evil in a church that has people of all different levels of maturity and faith, including some who are not walking in faith yet! Believers should be known by their genuine love for God and for people. They understand that love shows honor and affection to all people, no matter what level of maturity. Love requires patience with people as they work out their salvation. Love meets people where they are emotionally and shows hospitality. Love blesses and doesn’t curse. Love is humble and doesn’t judge people or seek to harm them an any way but to be a blessing. This walk brings glory to God!

Psalm 144:15 “Blessed are the people to who such blessing fall! Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!”

Prayer: Father God, I thank You for Your genuine love in Jesus Christ. Without His love, I would not know how to love others or You. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and pour out Your love through me to others in these practical ways taught by Paul to the Romans. I present my body to You and my mind to be renewed to love You better and preach Your Word that Your love may cover all offenses!

Proverbs 10:11-12 “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.”
