Scripture reading for January 12th: Genesis 21-23, Psalm 107, Mark 8
Mark 8: 1-6 “In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples to Him and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” And His disciples answered Him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” And He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” And He directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, He broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before the crowd.”
Jesus was full of compassion for the needs of ordinary people. The crowd had been with Him for three days and food was scarce in the desolate place they were staying. His solution was to call together His disciples and explain his feelings and help them reason through the alternatives. The disciples responded with a question filled with skepticism. Jesus asked them what they did have on hand–“seven loaves” was their response and ‘two small fish.’ Jesus received from them their meager supply. He took time to give God thanks and then He broke the bread and gave it to His disciples to distribute. As they set it before the crowd, the bread was miraculously multiplied to feed about four thousand men plus women and children! Jesus’ compassion brings God’s provision–in abundance! Twelve baskets were left over after all had eaten!
Genesis 22:14 “So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”/ as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Faith confession: Father God, thank You for these accounts of Your abundant compassion and provisions for those who are in need. I believe that I can call on You at any time for any need and You will provide the resources of heaven to meet the need. I praise You for Your steadfast love and wondrous provision of Jesus Christ, the sacrifice for the sins of all mankind!
Psalm 107:19-21 “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress. He sent out His Word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Let them thank the Lord for His steadfast love, for His wondrous works to the children of man!”
