Boasting in the Lord!

Scripture reading for September 5th: 2nd Corinthians 10, Psalm 27, Proverbs 22

2nd Corinthians 10: 14-18 “For we were the first to come all the way to you with the Gospel of Christ. We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be greatly enlarged, so that we may preach the Gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another’s area of influence. “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.”

Boasting of our talents, abilities, and conquests is a common phenomena among all people. Even God’s people can get caught up in this! Paul shared with the Corinthians how he was the first minister of the Gospel to come to them. He was proud that he was the first and he desired also to preach to them and see Christ formed in them as well as to press beyond their country to others who had not yet heard the Good News. But Paul stressed that his boasting was “in the Lord” Who sent him and gave him the privilege of knowing Christ and sharing with those still without salvation. His desire was to be commended by the Lord and fully accomplish all God sent him to do in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 27:1,14 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” . . .”Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord.”

Prayer: Father God, thank You for the call to preach the Gospel. In most cases, I have gone and followed the work of others who went before me. Thank You for those receiving salvation through Your Holy Word and the drawing of Your Holy Spirit. I can only boast in You, Lord, as all that has been done is for Your glory. Your are my Light and my Salvation. You are the Stronghold of my life! I wait on You each day!

Proverbs 22:29 “Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.”

Blessed are the persecuted!

Scripture reading for January 7th:  Matthew 5

Key Scriptures:  Matthew 5:11-12  “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Jesus warned and taught His disciples that they would be persecuted.  He, Himself, suffered persecution because of His stand for God’s truth.  Our attitude in times of persecution should not be “woe is me!” Jesus taught that His followers should rejoice and be glad because of a great reward in heaven!  This takes faith and an understanding of God’s word and His precious promises.  He promised great reward and that is enough!  We are not the first to experience this persecution and Jesus wasn’t either.  The prophets of old also suffered!  It is said that Isaiah was cut in half with a saw.  Jeremiah was cast into the mud of a cistern and eventually stoned in Egypt where he had warned God’s people not to go!  The people wanted to kill Moses and return to Egypt.  We stand in good company with God’s prophets when we are persecuted for righteousness!

Observation for over-comers:  Our attitude reflects the faith and rest we have in God’s promises in times of persecution that are already here!  “The Lord is my Light and my Salvation–whom shall I fear?   The Lord is the Stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?”  (Psalm 27:1)
