God our refuge!

Scripture reading for June 12th: Psalms 42-49

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Psalm 46:1-3

God’s ability to protect His people and help them in trouble is well documented.  He delivered David as a shepherd boy from the lion and the bear and then from the giant, Goliath.  He was able to deliver an entire nation from slavery in Egypt and then to protect them from the most powerful army on earth as they were being pursued.  Our God is a refuge and strength!  Fear not!

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.  God is within her, she will not fall’ God will help her at the break of day.  Nations are in an uproar, kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, the earth melts.  The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.  Selah Psalm 46:4-7

The source of strength was found within the Holy Place in the temple of the Most High God!  God’s presence was likened to a river of refreshing and life-giving water.  All who belonged to God would have this source of water available to them.  In the midst of confusion of the nations, God’s voice melted the earth, causing kingdoms to fall.  He Himself was their fortress and protection during judgment and war!

“He makes wars to cease to the ends of the earth, He breaks the bow and shatters the spear, He burns the shields with fire.  Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:9-10

God will ultimately bring peace to this troubled world.  We must silence our lips from fretting and fear and unbelief!  God now lives within us and His Holy temple is our body!    The Spirit is the river of Living Water that will refresh us and take us into the ultimate victory–life eternal!    (John 4:14, 7:38)

A Noble Theme

Scripture reading for June 12th: Psalm 42-49

“My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of skillful writer.  You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever.” Psalm 45:1-2

This psalm is written by the sons of Korah as a wedding song for the King of Israel.  It is one of ten “royal” psalms addressing the King, who in reality is God’s son, Jesus Christ!  As we look at this psalm, take note of those things that relate to Jesus and go beyond what any earthly king could expect.  These first verses tell of one who is the most excellent of men.  Jesus Christ, as the second “Adam”, was perfect in every way.  His lips were anointed with grace and He spoke as no other man!  (Matthew 7:28-29)  As the Son of God, He is blessed forever!

“Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.  In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds.”  Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies; let nations fall beneath your feet.”  (Psalm 45:3-5)

Jesus Christ was a humble man who came to us as the “Word of God”.  (John 1:1, 14)  The sword he wielded was  speaking truth that called men to repentance and righteousness.  By living a sinless life, He offered Himself for those who had sinned; He was victorious over Satan, death and hell!  God’s enemies were destroyed, and ours, too!  Jesus Christ is now King of Kings and He will come back riding victorious over all.  (Revelation 20:11-16)

“Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear: forget your people and your father’s house.  The King is enthralled by your beauty; honor Him, for He is your Lord.”  . . .”All glorious is the princess within her chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold.  In embroidered garments she is led to the King; her virgin companions follow. . .They are led in with joy and gladness; they enter the palace of the King.” (Psalm 45:10-15)

The King has a bride, the church!  They are called out of the world and clothed in royalty!  They are led with joy and gladness to the wedding feast in the King’s palace!  Oh how blessed they are!  (Revelation 19:6-9)
