The ‘excellent’ wife!
Scripture reading for May 10th: Matthew 25, Psalm 93, Proverbs 31
Matthew 25:6-11 “But at midnight, there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.; The all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves. And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
Jesus told the parable of the ten virgins in the bridal company after His initial warning to the disciples to watch and be ready. This parable describes a typical Middle East wedding of that time. The betrothal was a time for the bride to ready herself and her attendants. The bridegroom prepared the bridal chamber for his bride and gathered his attendants. At a time that no one knew, the announcement of the bridegroom’s coming would be made. The bride and her company must be ready to travel in the night to the wedding supper. In the story Jesus told, half of the bridal company was not prepared and were shut out. The point again was the need for readiness and watching! An ‘excellent wife’ is diligent to prepare!
Psalm 93:1-2 “The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; He has put on strength as His belt. Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for this illustration of the wedding and bridal company. I want to be ready and to help others prepare! But I know I can’t supply oil for those not prepared! Have mercy on me and help me keep my lamp trimmed and ready, full of oil! Help me to be about the preparation by sharing the invitation to the wedding supper with those who do not know. I listen for Your announcement!
Proverbs 31:10-11 “An excellent wife who can find; She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.”
