The Crowning of the High Priest

Scripture reading for September 28: Zechariah 5-6

Our goal during these devotions on God’s Word is to see Jesus Christ in every book of the Bible.  Zechariah, other than Isaiah, has more references to the coming of Jesus and His ministry than any other prophet.  In today’s reading we have more of the eight visions that God gave Zechariah to encourage the workers who were rebuilding the temple and city of Jerusalem.  Eight is the number of ‘new beginnings’.

Zechariah had already mentioned the ‘Branch’ Who was symbolized by Joshua, the High Priest.  This ‘Branch’  would come and be fully obedient to God and take away the sins of the nation in a single day. (Zechariah 3:8-9)  The High Priest symbolically did this on the Day of Atonement each year.  He went behind the veil of the Holy of Holies and sprinkled the blood of a lamb on the mercy seat.  His offering of blood was for the sins of the nation.  (Leviticus 16:15-17)

In today’s reading, Zechariah saw another vision of powerful horses going throughout the earth.  (Zechariah 6:1-6)  One of the horses went toward the North and reported rest being brought to God’s Spirit.  Zechariah then was told to take silver and gold from the returned exiles, make a crown, and set it on the head of Joshua, the High Priest.  He was to say to him: “Here is the Man Whose Name is Branch, and He will branch out from His place and build the temple of the Lord.  It is He Who will build the temple of the Lord, and He will be clothed with majesty and will sit on His throne.  And He will be a Priest on His throne and there will be harmony between the two.” (Zechariah 6:12-13)

As we reflect on this vision in light of the life and current ministry of Jesus Christ, we see that the ‘Branch’ is again a picture of Jesus Christ Who was and is both Priest and King!  He is our “High Priest” before God, there interceding for us. (Romans 8:34)  He is the “King of Kings” Who is coming in power to claim His bride, the church, and punish His enemies. (Revelation 19:11-16)

We are encouraged by these ancient visions today because of the revelation of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.  Jesus, our Priest and King, is praying for us today.  He has given us the Holy Spirit and we have overcoming power to share with the lost world the good news of His coming again.  We are watching for His return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords!  Our faith and faithfulness will crown Him when He comes!  (Revelation 4:9-11)

The garment dipped in blood!

Scripture reading for December 25th:  Revelation 19, Psalm 141-42, Proverbs 10

Key Scriptures:  Revelation 19:11-16  “Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse!  The One sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.  His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems, and He has a Name written that no one knows but Himself.  He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the Name by which He is called is The Word of God.  And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following Him on white horses.  From His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron.  He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.  On His robe and on His thigh He has a Name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

John beheld an awesome sight.  Heaven opened and Jesus the King of kings rode forth on a blazing white horse wearing a blood-dipped robe.  Following were a great host of saints, all wearing garments made white by His blood.  A sharp sword came from His mouth to make war and rule over His enemies.  His own bloody garment showed His love for His people.   He is their defender!

Faith Confession:  I believe and pray that I will be counted in the number of those following the King of Kings in His blood-dipped robe.  An old hymn states: “We shall see the King when He comes!”  Amen!

Psalm 141:8 “But my eyes are toward You, O God, my Lord; in You I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!”

King of Kings Comes!

Scripture reading for December 26th:  Revelation 19

Key Scriptures for over-comers:  Revelation 19:11-14, 16 “I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True.  With justice He judges and makes war.  His eyes are like blazing fire, and on His head are many crowns.  He has a name written on Him that no one knows but He Himself.  He is dressed in a rob e dipped in blood, and His Name is the Word of God.  The armies of heaven were following Him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.”  . . .”On His robe and on His thigh He has this name written:  KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Observations for over-comers:  Christians are the only ones on earth who know for sure who will come to judge the earth and redeem the faithful!  We do not know when, but Jesus’ coming is sure!  “Sing, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel!  Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem!  The Lord has taken away your punishment, He has turned back your enemy.  The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.”  (Zephaniah 3:14-15)
