Death and plague, but no repentance!

Scripture reading for December 12th: Revelation 9, Psalm 97, Proverbs 30

Revelation 9: 18-21 “By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound. The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

John witnessed in heaven the sixth trumpet sounding and the resulting plagues on the earth. In this judgment, four fallen angels have been bound at the Euphrates river. They are allowed to kill a third of mankind by plagues of fire and smoke and sulfur coming from a large number of mounted troops who are riding demonic horses. In spite of the death and the plagues, the people remaining on earth refuse to repent. They cling to their idols, who can neither see or hear or walk! They continue in their hatred, murders, sorceries, and immorality, although they know these actions have brought upon them the judgment of God Almighty. This is the mystery of iniquity: it blinds its perpetrators and takes them captive to their own destruction.

Psalm 97:7-8 “All worshipers of images are put to shame, who make their boast in worthless idols; worship Him, all you gods! Zion hears and is glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoice, because of Your judgments, O Lord. For You, O Lord, are Most High over all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods.”

Prayer: Father God, these sobering judgments cause me to cling even closer to Jesus Christ! Have mercy on our world and its inhabitants, Lord! Open their eyes to truth and draw them to repentance. Forgive them of their idolatry and selfish sins. I will be glad and rejoice when Your mercy accomplishes salvation for believers and Your justice fills the earth! You are exalted above all the earth! Worthy is the Lamb!

Proverbs 30:12-13 “There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth. There are those–how lofty are their eyes, how high their eyelids lift!”

Judgment fails to bring repentance!

Scripture reading for December 13: Malachi, Psalm 2, Revelation 9

Revelation 9: 18-21 “By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound. The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or thei sexual immorality or their thefts.”

It is a terrifying thing just to read John’s account of these angels blowing their trumpets and the judgments released on the earth that caused the death and destruction of a third of mankind. But is it even more terrifying to be told that those still alive after these plagues and judgments refused to repent. They still clung to their evil and rebellious way of life and chose to follow demons and gods of their own making that allowed them to do as they wanted. It has been said that sin is a form of insanity that takes us further than we want to go and exacts a price higher than we want to pay and keeps us longer than we want to stay. This is amplified during the great tribulation.

Psalm 2:10-12 “Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear; and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.”

Prayer: Father God, thank You for warning us by Your unchanging Word of the dangers awaiting those who are proud and arrogant and refuse to repent. No one will have an excuse on the day of judgment for You have shown us all mercy by warning us through the prophets and Your disciples. Use me today to share the warning and call all to ‘kiss the Son’ before the day of His holy wrath.

Malachi 4:1-3 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of Hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear My Name, the Sun of Righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of Hosts.”

Blow the trumpet!

Scripture reading for December 11th: Hosea 14, Joel 1-2, Revelation 9

Key Scriptures:  Revelation 9:18, 20-21  “By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths”.  . . . “The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

In John’s vision, the sixth angel blew his trumpet and four bound angels were released near the great Euphrates river.  The fact that they were bound implies that they were under God’s judgment and control.  Their task was to initiate a judgment on earth that would kill a third of earth’s population.  This was done by fire, smoke and sulfur.  After a third were killed, the rest of earth’s inhabitants still did not repent of idolatry or immorality and other terrible sins against God and man.

Joel  2:1-2 “Blow a trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming, it is near, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness!”

Prayer:  Lord Almighty, help me to sound the alarm and share the good news of a way of salvation for all mankind who will repent.  I know that this day is coming, for Your word is true!  Amen.
