He Will Appear a Second Time!

Scripture reading for December 15th: Hebrews 8-10

The Jewish believers being addressed by the writer of Hebrews needed help understanding the work of Jesus Christ in bringing atonement for their sins.   They were under the Old Testament law and knew that the High Priest went into the Holy of Holies once a year on the Day of Atonement.  He went in to offer the blood sacrifice for the sins of the people and even for his own sins.  This High Priest could only come from the line of Aaron or he would not be qualified to be a priest.  (Hebrews 9:6-7)

Their questions about this came from the fact that Jesus Christ was from the tribe of Judah, rather than from Levi and Aaron.  Jesus did not offer an animal sacrifice in the earthly temple like the Aaronic priests.  Jesus offered His own blood in the heavenly tabernacle.  The shed blood made forgiveness of sins possible for all who would put their faith in Him.  (Hebrews 9:21-26)  Jesus also offered this sacrifice of His own blood just once and then He sat down because His work was finished.  The writer of Hebrews had previously shown that Jesus was of the priesthood of Melchizedek.  This was because of the resurrection from the dead and the power of an endless life!

“But now He has appeared once for all to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.  Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are awaiting for Him.” (Hebrews 9:26-28)

Jesus Christ came the first time to take away sin and destroy it’s power to bring eternal death to mankind.  He offered His sacrifice of His own blood in Heaven itself before God’s throne.  But Jesus Christ is coming again!  This next time it will not be to bear our sins, but to bring the fullness of salvation to all those who have put their trust in Him.  Those who are waiting for Him gather together regularly to encourage each other to love each other and do good deeds.  (Hebrews 10:23-25)  Are you eagerly waiting and regularly gathering with God’s people?  The time is near!
