Guidelines for married, singles!

Scripture reading for July 15th:  1st Corinthians 7

The Corinthians had questions for Paul concerning marriage, divorce, and living as a single adult believer.  Paul used his letter to address these questions.  He used the teachings of Christ, the Scriptures, and his pastoral and personal experience to answer these questions.

“Now for the matters you wrote about:  It is good for a man not to marry.  But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.  The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.  The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband.  In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.  Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so you may devote yourselves to prayer.  Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”   (1st Corinthians 7:1-5)

Paul taught that singleness was a good thing for men and women. But if they lacked self-control, sexual relationship outside of marriage was ‘immorality’.  No immoral person can inherit the Kingdom of God!  (1st Corinthians 6:10)  But marriage was a good option.  When married, each person should be open to the needs of their mate and not withhold their body except  by mutual agreement for the purposes of prayer, and then just for a season.  Satan knows how to take advantage of our lack of self-control!

Believers should stay married to unbelievers if there is willingness.  The believing mate might win their spouse to Christ by their life and love.  If an unbeliever leaves the marriage, they are free to remarry a believer! (1st Corinthians 7:10-16)  God is interested in peace between husband and wife.
