Key Scriptures for over-comers: Hebrews 1:1-3 “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful Word.”
God, the Father, is a God who is active in the creation and spoke by revelation to man. In earlier times God spoke through the prophets. Prophets were anointed men and women who spoke as God spoke to them through direct conversation, visions, or dreams. But the writer of Hebrews declares that God’s final Words come from His own Son, Jesus Christ! In fact, He is the Word made flesh and is the embodiment of God’s nature and glory. His Son sustains all creation and the universe by His Word!
Observations for over-comers: Over-comers recognize God’s Son as God’s revelation of Himself to us in these last days and are sustained by His powerful Word! “I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise Your Name for Your love and Your faithfulness, for You have exalted above all things Your Name and Your Word.” (Psalm 138:2)
Scripture reading for October 30th: Hebrews 1:1-14
We serve a living God! This great God and Father of us all is a God who speaks to His people. The Bible is the story of God’s speaking to man to reveal His plan of redemption through His Son, Jesus Christ. The unnamed writer of Hebrews wrote to Jewish Christians who were going through intense persecution. Some of them were tempted to return to their past religion. The writer of Hebrews encourages them and us today to listen to God’s final Word!
“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” (Hebrews 1:1-3)
God had spoken to His people many times in the past. The Holy Scriptures contained the records of God’s communication with Moses, Noah, Abraham and the many prophets. But God’s final word came in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. God appointed Jesus as heir of all things, having made the universe and all it contained through His powerful word. Jesus Christ now upholds all things by His word and is the exact representation of God the Father. It is through Jesus Christ that we have purification of our sins. Jesus is now seated at God’s right hand in Heaven and is our mediator with God on our behalf.
The Jews understood and reverenced angels. Hebrews declared that Jesus was superior to angels in many ways. (Hebrews 1:4-14) His name was above all other names. Jesus was declared the Son of God and His Father declared that all angels should worship Him. The Father declared His Son was ‘God’ and gave Him a throne and kingdom lasting forever. His Son would be eternal and would outlast the creation He made. The angels were only ministering spirits, sent to serve the heirs of salvation.
Have you listened to God’s final Word from heaven? Do you want to know what God is like? Listen to Jesus and observe His life and teaching! He is worthy of our worship!
Scripture reading for December 11th: Hebrews 1-2
What is God like? God is a spirit and we are not equipped naturally to see or understand the character of a spirit-being. God sent His first-born Son, Jesus Christ to fully reveal His character. As we look at Jesus and His completely humble and obedient character, we can begin to know and understand God. The writer of Hebrews opens his letter with a wonderful statement about Jesus.
“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things and through whom He made the universe. The Son is the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” Hebrews 1:1-3
Jesus Christ is God’s last word for us. You might look at it like this. In the Old Testament times God spoke the language of “prophet” at various times and in various places. In New Testament times, God speaks “Son”. His Son is His exact representation. His Son made the universe! His Son sustains everything with His powerful word! If you really want to know about God, then look to Jesus and listen to His word. It is truth and full of power!
Not only is Jesus Christ the creator and sustainer of all that is, He also made purification for sins. His life of total obedience and reverent fear of the Lord made Him the only one capable of being a sacrifice for our sins. He willingly and obediently obeyed His Father and offered His body and blood to atone for sin. His sacrifice was sufficient and provides the only way to be cleansed from sin.
After offering Himself on the cross and tasting death for us, He was buried in a tomb. On the third day, He rose from the dead. He ministered for forty days to his amazed disciples and over 500 other followers before ascending to heaven on a cloud. Once there, He was seated at the right hand of the Majesty of God the Father. He took the place of the exalted first-b0rn Son of God. He is seated because His work is finished. He is there to intercede for us until He comes again for us.
“Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” Hebrews 2:14-15
This is the last word from heaven for us! We are free from the fear of death and the devil because of Christ’s death! May God have the “last word” in your life today and every day!
