Digging wells of blessing!

Scriptures for January 10th: Genesis 25-26

On our farm in Iowa, we had a dug well that was over 100 feet deep.  (Not a drilled well!) This well was about 4 feet across and my father and his dad and brothers had helped dig this well and brick it up.  Occasionally, we would set up a tower with a rope and a basket and my dad would be lowered into the well to check the bricks and eliminate roots that were growing in through the wall.  It always amazed me that Dad said he could see the stars from the bottom of that well in broad daylight.

“Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.” Genesis 26:19

Because of a famine, Isaac camped in the Valley of Gerar (Gaza) in the land of the Philistines (Palestine) and reopened the wells of his father Abraham. The well provided precious water in the desert that enabled crops, animals and humans to have refreshing and life.  They provided a gathering place for communities as people came for water daily.  (Remember Jesus meeting the woman at the well in Samaria.) In Isaac’s day, they became a source of quarreling.  Rather than fight over the wells, Isaac went to another location and dug a new well.  God blessed him to find a supply of water wherever he went.

It was there that God reaffirmed to him the promise of the land and descendants as the stars in the sky.  (Genesis 26:2-6) Isaac obeyed and planted crops that year.  God blessed him with a hundred fold return!  Jealousy caused the Philistines to stop up the wells of Abraham that Isaac had been using.  He moved on and dug new wells and God provided fresh water every time!  After God met him at Beersheba and blessed him, (Genesis 26:24-25)  Isaac responded with an altar and another well.

Are you digging wells in the place where God has sent you? As you dig, can you look up and see the stars of promise that God will fulfill? Do you need to dig again the wells of godly ancestors?

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give him will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14

The King on His Holy Throne!

Scripture reading for December 29th: Revelation 22, Psalm 110, Ecclesiastes 12

Revelation 22: 1-4 “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will worship Him. They will see His face, and His Name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”

The end of the matter has been recorded by the King and sent to us through the apostle John from his visit to the throne room of heaven. The King reigns in Zion over all His enemies! We were all once His enemies, but have been made righteous by the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, the King of Kings! His Name is on our foreheads! God provides for all the water of Life, flowing as love from His Son’s eternal throne. The nations are healed of their enmity through the Tree of Life and nothing accursed will ever be found again. The night is gone and the Lamb is our eternal Lamp! We have been given grace to be transformed from ‘enemies of God’ to ruling sons and daughters, reigning with Christ Jesus forever and ever! Amen!

Psalm 110:1-2 “The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool.” The Lord sends forth from Zion Your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of Your enemies!”

Prayer: Father God, I respond to this revelation of the end by holy reverence, awe, and worship! You have done it all! You have provided eternal life to me, an enemy, through grace! You have saved me from the judgment by paying for my sins through Jesus’ shed blood. You heal me and make me holy and give me a place in Your eternal family and holy city! You are my Light, my Life, and my Salvation forever and ever!

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or bad.”

Conquer by faith or die!

Scripture reading for December 28th: Revelation 21, Psalm 109, Ecclesiastes 11

Revelation 21: 5-8 “And He Who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also He said, “Write this down, for these Words are trustworthy and true.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be My son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. which is the second death.”

There is a glorious throne in Heaven, with One seated on it holding all power and authority to do as He pleases. When He speaks, His Words are trustworthy and true. We can write them down and act on them by faith. John heard God speak and command him to write down the Words of God. “It is done!” Everything necessary for salvation has been accomplished! Those who live by faith and trust in God’s Word and His Son, the Word made flesh, will have an eternal reward. They will be allowed to drink of the spring of the water of Life eternal by God’s grace alone! They will know adoption into God’s forever family as full-fledged sons and daughters! Those who shrink back in fear or rebellion to God’s laws, will suffer eternal destruction in the Lake of fire. This is the second death from which there will be no escape.

Psalm 109:30-31 “With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise Him in the midst of the throng. For He stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from those who condemn his soul to death.”

Prayer: Father God, You Alone have provided for such a wonderful salvation! Thank You Lord, I boast in Your amazing grace through Jesus Christ! In Him, I am more than a conqueror! His love and mercy have delivered my soul from falling into the eternal fires of judgment and condemnation! I have the water of Life eternal and God as my Father and Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior! I am blessed beyond measure!

Ecclesiastes 11:5 “As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God Who makes everything.”

The water of Life eternal!

Scripture reading for December 29th: Job 37-39, Psalm 103, Revelation 21

Key Scriptures: Revelation 21:4-8 “”He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And He Who was seated on the throne said, “Behold I am making all things new.” Also He said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be My son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.””

Eternal life is a choice made clear throughout Scripture. God clearly spoke from His throne to John about His plans. Those enjoying eternal life would enjoy eternity in His presence. There would be a newness of this full life that would totally eliminate death, suffering, mourning and pain. There would be the water of Life freely available for refreshing and quenching of thirst. John was instructed to “Write this down”! God’s Word is trustworthy and true for all time and eternity. But those who persisted in their sins: murderers, liars, sorcerers, sexually immoral and idolaters; their eternal lot would be the Lake of Fire, which is the second death. No thirst would be quenched there for ever and ever. The choice is laid out. Now we choose!

Psalm 103:1-4 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy Name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, Who forgives all your iniquity, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, . . .”

Faith confession and prayer: Lord Jesus, my “River of Life”, I choose life eternal and abundant! I will proclaim all Your benefits to those lost and in the darkness of sin. Fill me with Your love and mercy and power to witness afresh today.

Job 37:5 “God thunders wondrously with His voice; He does great things that we cannot comprehend.”

Christ is soon to appear!

Scripture reading for December 31st: Revelation 22:1-21

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city.  On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month.  And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.  No longer will there be any curse.  The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and His servants will serve Him.  They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.” (Revelation 22:1-4)

As this magnificent vision came to a climax, John again viewed the throne of God, this time in its setting of the New Jerusalem.  Here the throne had a river flowing from it, coming down the main street.  Along its banks stood the tree of Life, bearing fruit each month.  All His servants would serve God and have access to the water and tree of Life!  They  would see God’s face and reign with Him forever and ever!

“Behold, I am coming soon!  Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.” (Revelation 22:7)  John was informed of the truth of these words and reminded of the urgency of the message of the book he has written down.  As the promise of blessing was given to those who would read and obey in the beginning, it is now repeated as the vision ended.  (Revelation 1:3)

“Behold, I am coming soon!  My reward is with Me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”  “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of Life and may go through the gates into the city.  Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.” (Revelation 22:12-15)  Jesus Christ is coming soon!  This is repeated three times!  Some would enjoy blessing and reward, others would be left outside.  Will you be ready for your part in this abundant life? My prayer is that you can say with John and me: “Amen, Come Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20b)
