Wickedness leads to disconnection from God

January 8th Scripture Reading: Genesis 18-20

An ongoing debate and cultural war is going on in our society concerning gay and lesbian rights.  This issue  is nothing new!  From Abraham’s time over 4000 years ago, we have a record of people involved in this kind of sexual behavior.  “Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached Me.  If not, I will know.”  (Genesis 18:20-21)

Abraham had interceded with God and knew that God as the judge of the earth would not destroy the righteous along with the wicked. (Genesis 18:25)   In response to the reports of wickedness, God sent two angels to Sodom to rescue Lot and his family before judgment fell.  As these angels were visiting with Lot, the men of Sodom came knocking on Lot’s door, demanding to have those visitors (the angels) for their own sexual pleasure.  Lot pleaded with them, “Please don’t do this wicked thing.” (Genesis 19:6) But they began to move to break down his door.  The angels intervened, pulled Lot inside, and struck the men blind so they could not find the door.  They then warned Lot to gather his family and leave because they were under orders from God to destroy that city.  Lot tried to warn his son’s-in- law about the coming destruction and they thought he was joking! (Genesis 19:14)

All sin is wickedness.  It brings separation from God and ultimately His judgment.  Many today think Christians are jokers to teach that this sexual sin is wicked.  “Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah–from the Lord out of the heavens.  Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities and also the vegetation in the land.  But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.” Genesis 19:24-26  Those who perished weren’t laughing!

Exchanging truth for a lie!

Scripture reading for July 13th: Romans 1:18-32

Although the gospel is the power of God for salvation to those who will by faith believe in Jesus Christ, there was another group of people who have chosen to ignore God.  God has revealed Himself to all men through the His creation.  Paul wrote about this group in the reading for today and it speaks to our culture and time!

God’s wrath is ongoing in our world, not just something that will come at the end of time!  Paul stated that His wrath was being revealed against the wickedness of men who suppressed the truth by their wickedness.  What does ‘suppress’ mean?  To suppress means that the person saw the truth, but choose to ignore or push down the truth.  What ‘truth’ is it that these wicked men were suppressing?  That truth was the plain revelation of God’s eternal power and divine nature as revealed through His creation!  (Roman 1:20)

Paul stated that when a person suppressed this truth, his heart would become darkened by the lies that were used to push out the truth that God was making evident.  (Romans 1:21-22)  Instead of worshiping the invisible, immortal, living God who created all things, these darkened individuals chose to worship images and idols!  They exchanged truth for a lie!  This is one of the worst decisions a person can make.  (Romans 1:25)  It brings deeper darkness and increasing immorality!  Idolatry and immorality always are linked together in scripture.

Because they suppress the truth about God, God responds to their choice by giving them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity.  This lust is expressed in an exchange of passions: the natural use of sex for the unnatural!  Women burning for other women and men for other men are not natural!  God did not design the body for this unnatural union!  (Romans 1:26-27)  This is a consequence of suppressing truth!

These people chose not to retain the knowledge of God, even though His eternal power and divine nature were evident to them.  They also knew His divine decrees that those who practice what they were doing (unnatural sex), deserved death! (Leviticus 20:13)  (Romans 1:32)  They instead continued to do these things and encouraged others to do them as well!  This is what we are seeing in our nation today!  God’s wrath is ongoing–giving people over!  How we must pray and preach the powerful gospel!
