Thankful for escaping with life!
Scripture reading for August 31st: Jeremiah 45-49
Key Scriptures: Jeremiah 45:2-5 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch: You said, ‘Woe to me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am worn out with groaning and find no rest.'” The Lord said, “Say this to him: ‘This is what the Lord says: I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted, throughout the land. Should you then seek great things for yourself? Seek them not. for I will bring disaster on all people, declares the Lord, but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.”
Baruch was Jeremiah’s faithful scribe. He had been through all the derision and persecution and God had heard him lamenting the hard times he was experiencing and longing for something for himself. God spoke to him about His plans for judgment on the land and the futility of seeking great things on earth. He promised him escape from death and judgment–something eternal and lasting!
Stand firm for life: Jesus warned His disciples: “You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. All men will hate you because of Me. But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm you will gain life.” (Luke 21:16-19)
