Jesus, the Father’s delight!
Scripture reading for January 2nd: Mark1, Psalm 1, Proverbs 1
Mark 1: 9-11 “In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when He came up out of the water, immediately He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.”
John Mark was a friend of Paul, Barnabas and Peter. His mother’s house was a gathering place for the early church. Mark likely wrote this Gospel primarily from eye-witness accounts of Peter. He portrayed Jesus Christ as a man of compassion, action, and good news. He left out accounts of Jesus’ early life, and began with John the Baptist (Jesus’ cousin) and Jesus’ baptism by him. Jesus was submerged by John, who was preparing the people of Israel for the coming Messiah. As Jesus came out of the water, the heavens were torn open and the Holy Spirit (the Father’s Gift), descended on Jesus. A voice from heaven, God the Father, announced Jesus as His ‘Beloved Son’ and exclaimed how delighted He was in His Son! Jesus was then baptized as an act of identification with the sins of all mankind and began to preach the Gospel (Good News) of forgiveness of sins through repentance and faith. .
Mark 1:38-39 “And He said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And He went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.”
Prayer: Father God, Your amazing plan of salvation through sending Your Son still overwhelms me. Thank You for Your delight in Your Son and Your delight in the message of grace and forgiveness to all who believe. I willingly follow Jesus Christ and confess Him as my Lord and Savior. Use me today to fulfill Your plan to preach the Good News to all people in all nations. May my life of faith in Jesus give You delight!
Psalm 1:1-2 “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.”
Proverbs 1:33 “. but whoever listens to Me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”
