“Who Touched Me?”

Scripture reading for November 4: Mark 5:25-34 “And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. For she said, “If I touch even His garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in Himself that power had gone out from Him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched Me?” And He looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. “Daughter, your faith has made you well. . .”

In Mark’s record of this event, the Lord Jesus senses that power has gone out from His body and asks the crowd, “Who touched Me?”. I am sure Jesus knew who it was, but He used questions to help her deal truthfully with her faith. Jesus wanted to communicate with this woman and solidify in her heart how she had received healing. What she thought was a private event concerning a private issue of blood would now be recorded in Scripture to help all who are suffering with embarrassing healing issues.

This woman had heard of Jesus and possibly seen Him heal others. She had an issue that made her ‘unclean’ in that culture and others were not permitted to touch her or she them. She may have thought her approach was the safest for her and Jesus. As she reached out and touched Jesus garment in the press of the crowd, healing flowed into her body and she knew something had changed. But Jesus asked “Who touched Me?” She humbly came and confessed and shared with Him the reason she had reached for His garment. Jesus declared her to be a “daughter” in God’s family. He told her that her faith had brought healing and also peace with God. Faith is the currency of heaven, honored by God in those who act according to what they believe about Jesus.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I have need of healing for a private issue. By faith, I ask You for Your touch as I reach for You. Amen.
