The appointed time is very short!

Scripture reading for September 2nd: 1st Corinthians 7

Key Scriptures: 1st Corinthians 7:26-31 “I think that in view of the present distress it is good for a person to remain as he is. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But if you do marry you have not sinned, and if a betrothed woman marries, she has not sinned. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that. This is what I mean, brothers: The appointed time is very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.”

The Corinthians had written to Paul concerning marriage and remaining single in light of the pagan culture they lived in. Paul wrote back to clarify his teaching and God’s Word for those seeking to live by the truth. In light of the present distress and persecution, Paul gave clear instructions concerning relationships but also allowed freedom for the believers to follow the Holy Spirit. He emphasized that the culture was distressed and the time before Christ’s return was very short. That was the viewpoint of believers in the early church and it is still true! In light of this, living for God to the fullest extent and avoiding the worldly troubles that even a Christian marriage would be a wise choice. But if a person was betrothed and wanted to be married, that would be blessed as well. The bottom line was to avoid excessive worldly troubles and ensnarement but live up to the covenant commitments you already have.

1st Corinthians 7:17 “Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.”

Faith confession and prayer: Father, thank You for this instruction on marriage, singleness, and our calling as believers to live in fulfilment of Your assignment for our life. Help me to avoid worldly snares and enslavement of men and fulfil my covenant commitments to my wife and children and to You as my Lord and Savior.

1st Corinthians 7:23-24 “Your were bought with a price: do not become bondservants of men. So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.”
