Scripture reading for November 16th: 2nd Peter 1
Peter wrote this last letter about three years after his first. He wrote as a man who knew that his time on earth was short and that the church he helped found and loved was in danger. (2nd Peter 1:13-15) This danger came from complacency and stagnant growth in godliness through knowing Christ as well as from false teachers. It is a timely letter for the culture and time we live in today!
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”
True spiritual life comes from the living God. In His wisdom, He has provided us with the indwelling Holy Spirit as our source of spiritual life and and a Counselor of godliness. The Holy Spirit does this by revealing Christ to us and unveiling His word in our inner man so that we begin to walk by faith in that word. As we follow the Spirit and believe the word, we participate now in His divine nature and have power to escape the corruption of the world caused by our old carnal nature.
“For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge, and to knowledge, self-control, and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness, and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.” (2nd Peter 1:5-7) We must make every effort to grow in grace! Our fruitfulness depends on it!
